OK....heres the deal.

You have the following parts in front of you, and you want to set it up the best way you know how.

1) EVERCASE E4252WEF5, Intel P4 / AMD, 10-Bay, 300W P4, Truely Screwless ATX MID Tower Case. $42.00

2) 2 WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 120GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # WD1200JB - Ultra ATA 100 8.9ms Seek Time 8MB CACHE BUFFER - 2 @ $217.00 for $434.00

3) IBM 40GB 7200RPM Model Deskstar 120GXP Ultra ATA/100 2mb Cache Buffer 40mb/sec Data $79.00

4) 2 Crucial Micron 512MB 64x64 PC2100 DDR RAM, 184-Pin 2 @ $185.00 for $370.00

5) Shuttle AK35GTR KT266A AMD Duron/ Athlon 100/ 133 MHz FSB IDE RAID (Support ATA 133) $97.00

6) AMD ATHLON XP 2100+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL BOX 2100+ $260.00

7) Microsoft Windows XP Professional $140.00

8) ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500DV 64MB DDR AGP-RETAIL $309.00

Subtotal "
$1,740.00
Shipping and Handling Charge "48.14"

Grand Total "
$ 1,788.14

Missing is the DVD-RW and the DVD-ROM ....so add that in somewhere.

So, put the 40 gig a system boot / apps / whatever drive and the 2 120 gig for all video files in a raid 0 config.

The 40 gig would be the Primary master...no slave ?

Add a DVD-RW and a CD-ROM or DVD-Rom...The rom drive as secondary master, the DVD-RW as the S.Slave ??

With me so far ?

What would you do with this system....or how would YOU set it up ?

Let the games begin.....

looks like u're main concern is how to configure the RAID array and the like.

since i've no expertise in setting up RAIDs, i can't really help.

I assume that you put the IBM on primary master using the onboard IDE controller...then stick the RAID array on the RAID controller as "primary"...if primary even makes any sense when using RAID....do you have to put both drives on the same channel, or different channels for RAID?

hmmm...

40 gig pri master dvd pri slave cdrw sec master (on the raid controller each drive set to master on seperate channels (i believe )

you gonna read from dvd to burn to cdrw i'd put the drives on seperate channels for that

raid i'm not positive but i believe both need to be masters on seperate channels

boy hope this helps

Wolfsraider's got it right. In RAID0 you need to set each drive as master on separate channels.
As for your questions I'd do 40GB primary master, rom drive as primary slave, and put the burner as secondary master.
Other option is to put the rom drive as slave to the burner on the secondary channel. Don't do it that way if you plan to burn from the rom drive.

Thx guys...you guys just plain rock !

I had it close then....it just feels better after a confirmation.

jOjO316 Yes, I can change anything I want still...but I have submitted the list to the customer already.
So I can change what I want, they trust me, but they know what I want to do already so far.

I think I will ask them about burning on the fly....or not burning from the drives....
That would help me decide on how to configure the DVD-RW & the DVD-rom.

If they will burn from the HDD, then I think I should put the DVD-RW as sec/master all by itself...right ?
That would be good for burning from the 40 gig or the DVD-rom I think.

LMK if I got this wrong though

Thx again guys

I would get a different RAID card. The one on your motherboard sucks. No offense. That would help dramatically in improvement, since I'm 99% sure you cant set an optimal stripe size cause its probably the LITE version or whaterver.

BTW if you haven't ordered it yet, I would get a different mobo. The Asus A7V266-E or A7V333 would be my choice.

In response to the Burner config thing.

For on the fly burning all that matters is the drives are on different cables.

Whichever drive is faster at reading your media should go opposite hard drive.

If you are ripping DVD's put DVD as Master on 2nd channel.

If you rip music and the Burner is faster, then put that on Master 2nd Channel.

Lastly for the RAID 0, yes u want them on different channels as Master.

For more info head to the www.storagereview.com forums. Don't bother posting this crap, you wont' get a response. Instead search for a thread, since this has been posted so many times before.

So what kind of video editing will they be doing?

If it's home video, or even moderate soho type stuff, I'd say don't worry about the raid 0. For desktop-level stuff, most of the software isn't real-time enough to warrant trying to get the raid 0 speed boost and most ide raid 0 solutions aren't that good anyway, especially on-board ones. One big drive will be fast enough. The real question is what's the plan for working vs. storing. There are a couple ways to tackle this. One is to have your working volume have all the raw captures and the working file, and the storage drive is where you write out the completed project. This is probably the most common setup for people with more than one drive. Another is to have the raw source on a huge storage drive, have the working file on a fast working drive, and write back out to the "finished" folder on the storage drive or a finished drive.

One thing to think about is an Oxford911 firewire enclosure. It's actually fast enough to capture to and if you want to move the files to another computer to work on it's a whole lot easier to move the drive than to transfer the footage over a network.

If they are trying to do moderately professional or long pieces, then SCSI raid 3 might be a really strong consideration. And it won't be cheap.

<< Id save my money and buy a mac. >>

I have a Final Cut Pro setup, and it's still a question of drives. The platform doesn't matter.

Personally i don't care much for Raid-0 at all.

IF it were my system i would place each WD drive on it's own IDE channel using a quality ATA133 card. This way you can capture video straight onto drive1 (those drives should be PLENTY fast). Then when you edit/encode you can send the video across to drive2. This way the same drive/array won't have to BOTH read and then write the data being transferred, keeps the work flowing-reading drive1, cpu encodes it, then writes to drive2. Then use a 3rd drive to manage the OS and swap file so it doesn't slow down the video encoding drives.

You need a seperate ATA card for your dvdrom/rw, put one on mobo ide2 as SM and the other on ATA card as PM.
