That is the difference between the two, as you see they are quite similar.

Yeah CS5 apparently is a game changer when it comes to hyperthreading and 64 bit and all that jazz, so CS4 benchmarks may be a lot closer between the two CPUs than CS5 benchmarks, which I can't seem to find.

Kingkazma, you've been saying 2600k is worth it over the 2500k from the get-go, have you got any word on what specifically we're talking about here in measurable performance?

It's not likely, but we have reason to believe the Hyperthreading will help a lot.

AHA!

Well, sort of AHA!, I guess we are assuming here that the footage and effects this guy used in the two tests were exactly the same. It doesn't explicitly say that he did use the same testing method?

Anyway, whipping out my calculator here, that's an 18.27% performance increase from a 2600k over a 2500k in rendering his test footage, again, assuming it's the same conditions in both tests.

Now, obviously you can shop around, and King I think I remember saying you were getting your 2600k from microcenter, but there isn't one near me so I would probably just go NewEgg or something with similar pricing.

Currently on NewEgg, the price difference between a 2600k and 2500k is $109.

So now we're talking, specifically for CS5 application, an 18.27% performance increase for $109

I think that's good bang for buck

Well I disagree with your denominator there, I think the price should be compared to total system cost, because the entire system is 18% faster at the application.

It is just for that application however nothing else, if you had the i5-2500k it would perform the same for everything BUT CS5 where you get 18% gain. so it isnt a gain for the whole system.

lol, well, I can tell this isn't an argument I'm going to be able to win.

I mean I think whether a performance gain is "worth it," barring the no-brainer or the ridiculous overkill, is usually a gray area.

But, just to be clear, in your opinion, going 2600k over 2500k for this specific application would be a poor buy?

If this is a money making application for you where time=money then it is a good buy as it will pay for itself eventually. If however it isnt that important, you just like working in this stuff for a hobby or you are just doing small time stuff then i dont think it is a smart buy.

well a bugatti costs 12x a GT-R but isnt 12x faster..

but its okay dude, i'm one of those guys who make a living on aftereffects, 3d max and stuff like that so that little increase means a lot to me.

No I hear ya man.

What type of video card are you going with. Everyone's saying GTS 450 is the way to go, and it is at a great price, but I also hear processing cores and VRAM are important, and the 460 has twice the VRAM and ~50% more processing cores.

lols im running AE through the cpu so im really not sure what card to get... i do game a bit so im leaning towards the gtx560ti DirectCUII because at OC it's near 570 performance.

Yep, pretty much boils down to this. I expect superlinear improvements on upgrades for my home machines, but am willing to pay $2-3 for 1% at work. (It helps that it is on the university's dime as well!)
