Was thinking of building a $1000 system for home movie editing. Just wondering if anyone else has a system strictly for this, and if so, what is your system setup?

Thanks

I am also interested to see what other people use for video editing. I am in the process of upgrading one of my computers to use as an editing box. Although I will also use it for high end gaming a.k.a. Doom 3, Half-life 2, I will use my other computers for all other duties. It is currently a P4 3.2 EE, 1 Gig RAM, 74 Gig Raptor, Win XP Home, and a 250 Gig hard drive and another Gig of RAM should be here tomorrow. In a month or so I am going to buy a second monitor so I can dual monitor.

a mac, i wouldnt really even think of doing any image design/video editing on my pc, but its not like you can build a mac :-\

check out a socket 939 and a board with raid-0, should handle video just fine.

Home movies using a D8 or Mini-DV camera or is it VHS-C, 8mm, or Hi-8?

Yes, you can do it under $1k, but not much under.

Upgrades, n order of preference:

160-200GB second HD (1 hr of video is 13GB - burning a project to DVD can use 8-12GB creating the files - so a 20GB HD does not cut it.)
At least 512MB of mem, but 1GB preferred
DVD-+RW Writer (many DV cameras will pass through video, so you can write back to tape or a VHS deck.)

Required:
Firewire - IEEE1394 (for DV) OR Analog capture card (VHS-C, 8mm, Hi-8) - Pinnacle has some good solutions that come with Studio 9, but do not get the USB version.
Speakers (audio on board should be good enough)

I use my P4 for capturing TV shows, stripping the commercials and then converting to XviD. I capture everything in using the HuffyUV codec @ 640x480 and PCM wav audio, so a large amount of disk space is a requirement. Figure 40-50GB / hr if you're doing this, plus room for the final version (varies). If you're doing DV, figure 11 - 12GB / hour. AMD and Intel are both about equal at encoding now at similar price points (AMD takes the lead for top of the line chips) but you'll definitely want a lot of storage.

My workstation listed in my rigs is my video editor. A bit more than $1k though, but so are most Macs for editing. The PC solution allows you to use software that is less than $100. Final Cut Express is a wee bit more. But then again, I use Liquid Edition which is not cheap.

You could edit on a Shuttle. Comes with audio and Firewire in many packages. You can pick your processor whether AMD or Intel. Intel is slightly faster for NLEs (about the only thing), but it is not a big deal. I am eyeing the new PCI-e Shuttle with the 915 chipset as a possible portable HD editor when Pinnacle releases the HD video card. Supports two drives also.
