Video editing System

Looking to build a system that will be used for day to day tasks as well as video editing. No overclocking or playing of games will be done. Was looking at the Q6600 CPU as it is more reasonably priced than the newer 46 nm CPUs. Perhaps that that CPU is over kill and I could use a C2D CPU instead?

Also any recommendations for a motherboard. Would prefer a parallel port if possible and ATA controller. I noticed that the spreadhsheets in this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/ca...catid=29&flcache=66299 have not been updated since late last year. Are these files dated at all?

Thanks for any help.

Depends on your choice of video editing software - if it threads well, then a midrange quad core would be better. Hardly any consumer software does, though, so a fast dual may very well be the better choice.

Apart from that: Lots of RAM, a 64-bit OS if your software is available in 64-bit, and big fast hard disks. RAID 0+1 4-disk array of Samsung F1, for example (or a RAID 0 of two, if you don't care about data safety ...)

Ok thanks for the info. I am kinda of shy going to a 64 bit O/S due to driver problems as well as the lower end consumer editing software does not appear to be 64 bit aware. The only advantage to 64 bit O/S is its capability of addressing more than 4 GB of memory if hardware allows it.

I am a video editor. Lots of us use the Intel 975XBX2KR

UNfortunately, not too many places carry them anymore especially for a reasonable price.

Mine has the Intel E6600 in it. Works very well. Most editing software will not take advantage of four core processing so a dual core seems most logical unless you are getting a really good deal on a Quad Core.

If you're not going to overclock or play games at all, have you considered going over to the Rebel Alliance, aka Macintosh? Though if you're already comfortable with Windows video apps, or simply dislike Mac OS X, then of course it's perfectly all right to edit on a 'PC'. Not to mention a fully kitted out Mac Pro costs as much as a small car...

Which video apps do you (plan to) use?

I can get he Q6600 for $230 CDN vs $190 CDN for a E6700. I probably will use Adobe Premiere Elements or Pinnacle Studio.
