hi

my bro is really into makin movies and he currently uses Pinaccle 7 something or other to do it, but its just really not cutting it for him...

can anyone recommend a good, semi-pro or even professional video editing software package? preferrably something that has features like setting up a pro looking menu / special features on DVDs etc

thanks!

I'm personally a fan of Adobe Premiere, I haven't used it in a year or two now.. Last version I used was 6, not sure if a newer one is out yet. Fantastic software, will do everything you need and more. Extremely professional. We did a great deal of high class stuff (this is in my high school TV studio I'm talking.. 900,000 dollar studio, 3 digital studio cams, 3 mini dv portable cams, professional control room eq, etc..) with Premiere, we even created 5 min segments that ran on NBC monthly. I'm not too sure about DVD features as it's designed as an editor.. not really to burn video DVDs or anything, but you could check on it.

Depends on if you need and know how to use the added capabilities of Premiere. it is a significant step up from Pinnacle.

Definitely go with Adobe Premiere as it has everything that will be needed to make good movies.

i wanna bump this thread and keep the discussion re: "good video editing software" going...

I am currently using Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.0 and i never heard anything bad about it.

I'd like to hear your inputs what you think about the other progs (which i dont know anything about)...eg. Ulead, Pinnacle, Premiere etc...

I mean, i also had some very quick and nice results in Windows Movie Maker 2, the problem here is only that it has problems with the sound of my videos. (8 bit PCM, that's what my Canon cam records to..and MM2 gives terrible distortion)

My priorities are: intuitive GUI...quick results...and not having to bother with a lot of stuff i actually do not even need. On the other hand it should be flexible enough to support 3rd part codecs and render in different formats...also, availability of plug-ins/ like scene transitions etc...

My cons with Vegas 4.0: I miss some effects like i had in MM2, i cannot encode with Lame mp3 codec (crashes)...no scene detection in the editor. Otherwise i think it's good.

greets

i vote for VegasVideo 4. Unless you have a NLE card, this is the software to get.
makes editing looks so easy with full features.

Premiere=painful fire and brimestone while editig in hell.

Premiere Pro, which is coming out soon, sounds like it will be a huge, huge step forward out of Premiere (which has gone from desktop NLE leader to laughing stock) but only time will tell if Premiere Pro is as good as it's supposed to be.

FCP's price/performance ratio is just about unbeatable, but if you are stuck using a PC I'd recommend Vegas Video.
