although this example of socialism doesn't work, most other forms of socialism do work. there's an exception to every rule
DPRK isn't socialism...it's communism. And yes, "socialism" "works" but capitalism works much better.
neither capatalism nor socailism works. what works is capatalsm with a litle socialism thrown in. thats what we have in america. some countries throw too much socalism in and you get france.
too much socialism is what we have now.. it barely works, but it's failing gradually, and will take years to completely collapse: social security and unions/gm for example.
right now the UAW workers get paid more than my brother (engineer). granted, he has a nice raise sometime in the future
The paradox (read: hypocrisy) of France is that they are reaping the benefits of the global neo-liberal economy, and bashing it all at the same time.
The US isn't close to being socialist. The UAW/GM thing going on right now is not because of socialist policies, but because inaccurate/erronous actuarial calculations during the 1960s-70s.
The managers of that era were raised in the post-WW2 period, where they saw the birth of the welfare-state. As soldiers were returning without jobs, it was hard for politicians to ignore them, because they had served their country, and the state could not ignore them.
So, in that context, the left movements weren't being referred to as left-wingnuts yet.
(that's my take on it.. of course, the events can be interpreted is many different ways)
