Hi, I hope someone can help - this is driving me mad.
For some strange reason, my PC has lost the ability to play movies properly. I don't know what I have done (or when?) to screw it up, but here's the symptoms:
1. Window Media player won't play DVD's at all. No sound, no picture. The nVidia decoder icon appears in the system tray and it thinks data is coming through, because the bit-rate meter shows the data rate. But nothing on screen, and no sound.
2. Nero Showtime plays DVD just fine (with a different codec, perhaps?)
3. Media Player plays some .mpg's with no picture. Others play OK. I can't figure out what is the difference between the ones that do play, and the ones that don't. Quicktime plays all mpegs with no problems.
4. nvDVD won't play any DVD's at all. It bombs out with some error - can't remember what. nStantmedia won't play DVD's either. It says "An unexpected DVD error has occurred".
Of course I could just use Nero and Quicktime, and forget about the problems. But I really like the picture quality using the nVidia DVD decoder.
Here's what I have tried (so far) to fix it.
1. Uninstalled nDVD, nvidia dvd decoder (inc nStantmedia), and 71.89 drivers. Reinstalled same. No effect.
2. Uninstalled all of above and reinstalled 66.93 drivers or 67.02 drivers and reinstalls the apps. No effect.
3. Uninstalled all of above and reinstalled everything *except* the nvidia dvd decoder. Windows Media Player now plays DVD's but colors are wrong. .mpg's still don't work - sound but no picture.
4. System Restored back to about 1 week ago. But it was still broken then. I don't want to restore further back than 1 week - I would lose too much other stuff.
What else can I try? Does anyone have a clue what is causing this problem and how to fix it? Everything was working perfectly a few weeks ago and I have only just noticed its now screwed up.
