Video Quits All of a Sudden

Help me diagnose this problem.

I am running XP pro, sp3, with a ASUS PS5 Deluxe MB. I am not overclocked. Things will be going just fine and all of sudden I lose video, but the computer is still running. Monitor goes to sleep mode but there is no way to get it out from there. I have setup display properties to never go to sleep mode. I have other usb things attached to the computer that continue to keep working. This leads me to believe that this is a video board problem and not a monitor problem. My video board is a pci express type and has 2 digital outputs. I first corrected this problem by switching the connection from one port to the other. Now the same problem is occurring that previously occurred with the other port. I thought that maybe there was a heat issue and removed the sides of the computer box. I run at about 30C with or without the sides on the computer.

What are your thoughts.

I meant to add that I would be just typing along like this and bingo, the monitor goes out. Turn off computer and reboot and it would come back fine. However, it would not display anything this morning on boot up, yet I can hear Windows do its little chime thing on startup and the peripherals work, just no display.

I run the ASUS PS5 deluxe MB, e6400 Conroe, Corsair 2x1024 PC6400 RAM, eVGA 7900 256 PCI express, 22" Viewsonic

This stuff was all pretty hot about 18 months ago.

Never had any odd stuff with Windows XP. Never had the monitor to do anything strange.

I have all the power savings and sleep features turned off.

I am basically just running AutoCad which should not tax the video at all.

Any chance you have an old monitor to set with to rule out a dying monitor? Is it totally random or does it take a certain amount of time? What I mean is does it sometimes happen after 5 minutes, and other times work ok for several hours? Or is it more like it always happens after about 30 minutes?

It could be a problem with the monitor or the video card. As thegisguy said, try swapping the monitor with another one or to another computer, and exchange with a spare video card if you have one available.

Problem is that I do not have another digital monitor. This issue was happening alot a couple weeks ago. I then decided to change the output from the video card from one digital port to the other. Bingo, that seemed to solve the problem and there was no issue until the last few days and the same kind of problem started all over again. I then tried switching back to the other port on the video board and nothing changed. This makes me believe that it is the video board dying and not the monitor.

Yep it sounds like the cvideo card. Good excuse to upgrade i think.
