Well, I had a 21" Sony back then, so I NEEDED to run it at 1024x768. 800x600 looked just awful
I had Diamond Monster2s. Is that what brand you got?
You know, I still have those v2s sitting in anti-static bags in a box somewhere.

I used to have the Creative Labs brand V2 boards SLI'd together Cool technology at the time
My very first Voodoo 1 board was a Diamond spent 300 bucks on that bad boy back in the day!
