Assuming the 3060 8 GB is just a BOM reduction and the 3060 Ti GDDR6X is just getting rid of excess 19 gbps GDDR6X.

Videocardz clams that these will launch at the end of October.

It appears that it is still going to take more than that to get people to move to AMD.
The issue is AMD cards don't sell at US prices in most of the world. 6600 is only marginally cheaper than a 3050 here. maybe $20 but the most expensive 6600 is more than the cheapest 3050.

same with RX 6700 xt for what $400 in US? yeah I would insta buy. Here still more like >$500.

Precisely. Though I think referring to the customers as idiots is harsh, despite being potentially accurate.

Harsh, but true. What good does putting on kid gloves serve beyond saving someone's feelings. There have been plenty of times in my life where I needed to have my ass chewed out. I didn't like it much at the time, and sure someone could argue it was perhaps too harsh, but I honestly can't say I'm worse off for the rebukes I've received.

To reiterate, it's their money and if they're buying what I might consider a bad deal with full knowledge of what they're getting and what the alternatives are, I really don't have a problem with that. People have different priorities or value some features or aspects of a product differently than I do, but people who just blindly make purchases without doing their homework first are just asking to get burned.

Sadly, that's how the world economy works. If everyone did their homework, almost no one would buy inferior products and demand would outstrip supply. In a way, it almost makes me glad in a sort of dishonest way, that the general population doesn't care about delving into the specs of every product they buy.

I remember this one guy who bought the ASUS Geforce 2 MX 200 and claimed that it would perform better than Geforce 2 MX 400. I got so mad at him but he refused to listen. Few months later, I bought some cheapo brand MX 400 starting with H (probably dead brand now) and did the benchmark. Sure enough, it beat his MX 200. When I showed him the benchmark result, he said, "Cool! But my card works great and really smooth!". I didn't bother arguing. I was just pleased that I spent less money than him and got better performance.

RTX 3050 8GB bait-n-switch incoming.

Lower CUDA core count in the newer one. No name or video memory amount change.

Except he is comparing the full GA106 which the 3050 doesn't use. They both use 2560 cores no matter the chip.

GA106 3050

GA107 3050

What I don't get is remember the hellstorm that came about when it was learned that the 970 was 3.5 + 0.5GB? It was huge.

When NVIDIA is getting Senior VPs like Jonah Alben on the phone with us on a weekend night to talk architecture and answer questions, this isn’t normal operating procedure for the company.

Seriously, just go and search and you will see it everywhere. Funny thing is IIRC the last 0.5GB being slower wasn't much of a big deal. Probably because at the time that was plenty of RAM. These days when we get a 1060 3GB ( a real loser of a card even without the RAM issue), or a 3060 Ti 8GB, or that other 3000 series that got chopped down a month or two ago, it doesn't seem to get as much attention.

Thankfully with the 4000 series things seem to have turned around. The 4080 that got unlaunched. Though it looks like it will be keeping the same price with the new name. Or the rumored specs of the 4060 Ti with a 128(!) bit memory bus and 8GB of VRAM. AMD sure did pick a lousy time to screw up. They may still have a chance to take an advantage of their mid and lower end cards do well.

At $899 there is already a big gap with the 4080, but my suggested solution to that problem is to drop the 4080's price...

I may just skip this generation if things don't improve (enough) or buy at the very end. Perhaps we'll get that respin and AMD will suddenly be much better. Or they find a huge improvement from better drivers. And perhaps they will want to go for market share once chip fabrication capacity is really plentiful.

I think the 4080 price needs to drop by necessity. It was funny watching the latest GN video asking merchants about 4080 sales. The 7900XT and 4070 Ti should be (way lower, but with AMD/NVIDIA trying to gouge) $800. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people skip this generation. Once the initial wave of buyers get what they want sales will plummet, inventory will pile up, and prices will crater in six months or so. One can dream, right?

Yeah and the lower you go in the stack, the more budgets are fixed. So I foresee low sales all around if they stick to this pricing scheme. However, I think that Jensen is extremely stubborn and arrogant, so he'll ride out these prices until sales drop off a cliff. So we might indeed see 6 months of this.

I do think that he is burning a lot of bridges with AIBs like this and he better hope that there doesn't come a time where he needs a favor from them, which he cannot enforce.

I'm really curious to see what Q4 and Q1 sales will be & what Nvidia's guidance will be in the quarterlies.
