According to 3DCenter, new GK110 chip may have up to 550mm2 of die size. This would be 87% more than actual GK104. Some say this is too much, and NVIDIA will not release gpu that large, because cost production of such gpus is significantly higher. But latest rumors suggest that it may be somewhere in those dimensions. Bigger die allows engineers to put more SMX’s on new gpu. It is said that GK110 may have up to 2304 CUDA cores. NVIDIA is already preparing their GeForce GTX 690, a dual-GK104 card, which will have 3072 CUDA cores. This would put AMD in very bad position. AMD is already preparing factory overclocked Radeon HD 7970 as a response to GTX 680 performance. There are also plans for Radeon HD 7990, which will put AMD on the top position of performance race for a moment. NVIDIA will release their dual-gpu GTX 690 card right after that, which will replace a winner once more.

Going back to GK110, a card built in 28nm process, which will likely have 2304 CUDA cores, may have completely reorganized GPU structure. Streaming multiprocessors may rise to 10 (in comparison to GTX 680). NVIDIA could use 512-bit memory interface on this one. It is rumored that GK110 will consume around 250 Watts. Card should be prepared for August 2012. Naming is not yet revealed, but since GTX 680 is already taken, this card may be called GTX 685 (leaving GTX 690 brand for dual-gk104). It is also possible that NVIDIA will decide to release new GK110 gpu as a card from GeForce 700 series, but this would be a marketing failure as owners of GTX 680 would feel confused – having a graphics card which is a generation old after 5 months.

Say this card only releases int he HPC sector - so $2.5K + easily.

Who would buy? Just curious. I'd go Tri-SLI GTX 680 before that! haha.

Remember, this is a big IF - nothing factual. Opinion!

If NV built actually built and released this thing it would take the performance crown and bragging rights for a number of years. I just don't see AMD building something equivalent.

Considering that nVidia released the 580 roughly 7 months after the 480, I don't think that they'd have any problems launching GK110 has the 780. Also, based on leaks, if the 690 is dual-GK104 it will probably be better for gaming anyways.

It's also possible that a lot of the GK110 changes will go into making it better for compute as that's a market segment that nVidia won't want to give up so easily since AMD apparently put a lot of effort into getting good performance in those areas with GCN. That probably explains why the rumors show such a large die, but not nearly as many CUDA cores as one would expect.

If that's the case, it's a really interesting strategy from nVidia. Rather than make a single architecture and spread it across various die sizes, make an architecture that's modular enough that with some changes it can either be a kick-ass gaming card or with modifications in another direction, perfect for high performance computing.

Rumors are saying august, with a 6 series moniker, meaning it's not on a refresh schedule only that Nvidia focused on GK104 first to get it out and found it faster than the 7970 so they gave it the 680 name.

550mm2 is pretty much what you'd expect at this point from BigK. TDP makes sense as they needed to pump it up after pumping up GK104 past it's typical 140-160 TPD range to pass up the 7970.

Who knows though, perhaps tomorrow we'll get info on it directly from the horses mouth.

Remember this slide ? Was one of the first leaks months ago and thought to be fake. I believe the numbers are right for GK104 though ? Or very close ? Could be this is also what GK100 is going to be.

I think we'll see the card end of year/early next year. No enthusiast will pay $500 for a GK104 instead of $600 for a GK100. They'll milk the GK104, release a 690 with two GK104s on board and refresh a 780 with GK100, going on past history.

GK100 sure looks like a 680.

LOL

so GK 110, will be named 685, then the other 2 cards that is usually made by the same sku, will have some interesting names

What is it with all these threads lately? Lets not pack into this thread holding a candle light vigil hailing the rumors as gospel.

Did you just contradict yourself? First you speak like nVidia has already released gk104 and did so as the 680 because it just so happend to be faster than he 7970 then in the followiing paragraph say that nVidia is running the card harder than intended to make it the faster part.

Everbody seems to be forgeting about this.

I find it comical that the OP shows of a rumored 2304 cuda core part which is the same number of cores in that "discontinued" part in the sapphire leak I posted.

There is wayyy too much mumbo jumbo going around for anybody to even get remotely excited about any of these rumors.

How does Nvidia finding they can increase TDP by 25-45 watts to change a $250-300 part into a $500+ part contradict what I said?

Same naysayers on the 680 rumors which proved to be true now question the validity of the bigK rumors... What?

Wow, some people get VERY upset about Kepler rumors...

who is upset?

Nothing has proven to be true, which is my point. I'll get excited when they launch. If it is a clearly better part then my 7970 then guess what will happen? I WILL have one.

Pretty much this. I'm sure some green fans are itching to gloat/troll, but hey whatever. Its going to be mine if its clearly better than 7970. I would like to see some more super high resolution results (2560x1600) as this is most relevant to me.

In today's CeBIT meeting with AMD, we talked to Product Manager Evan Groenke on these films. Mr. Groenke knew the film already and could not suppress a grin.
He described the film as a well-made fake, and said openly, that this does not constitute an official AMD film.

Yeah just not getting the animosity. If there was a GK110 dropping tonight, I would be refreshing etailors and buying two ASAP. :awe:

Forgive me for trying to be realistic and reasonable so I don't look forward to something coming under an unrealistic set of expectations. :sneaky:

nVIDIA has every reason to deny the existence of this chip to sell more GTX 680s. However, nVIDIA likely needs this chip for HPC as many have pointed out.

It's over, AMD is finished

but seriously, that souds like one monster of a card if it's true, i just wish the potential release dates for this and AMDs equivalent weren't so far away.

Gee.. now we get all riled up about some card in Q3 or even Q4 hell even Q1 2013?? Isn't IT A BIT EARLY?!

Some people need SOMETHING from the nV side to cheer/argue about. I mean, they must be really disappointed that nV didn't release a 7970 killer for $300.

Speculation is fun sometimes but are we all really gonna now start arguing about a card that is SO FAR from release?
