I can attest to the pure size argument. 30" blew me away and I regret not getting one sooner. 1600p indeed brings out a lot of details, but the resolution is not overkill at all at that size, indeed the pixels are rather large.

Lightboost looks to be working on AMD cards also.

Unable to try it as I don't have a monitor that the feature is functional on.

Lightboost works great with AMD cards thanks to ToastyX's StrobeLight app. I've been using a Lightboost monitor with my cards for months now and it is well worth the investment IMO.

Years ago all i used to care about was making sure i had as much AA as possible, guess as i have gotten older suddenly i don't even care for applying it as items can look sharper sure but some games look blurred out with fxaa and others tank your cards if you use something like msaa.

If i jumped around worrying about what performance a game offers fps wise cause i crave applying msaa,i would be upgrading my card every week if upgrades came out weekly lol.

I used to be like that too but worst I was so obsessed with OC and running benchmarks that I would not really enjoy my PC. I turn off AA if I can now since I cannot really see a difference with it on and sometimes it is blurry. If I stop and really play attention to it then yes it makes a small difference but not enough to worry about it. I play most FPS so I am constantly moving around and pay little attention to how cables look and I am more interested on seeing where the next enemy will pop up. Upside is that I can play at higher settings and get higher frames since I turn off AA

When I play FPSs I do the same. I play mostly RPGs though and seeing a stairstep edge wiggle across the screen really takes me out of it, especially during cut scenes... :\

I figured as much....I was more debunking one of those darn urban myth type things as it's pimped as a Nvidia only feature.

lol some of you claiming AA is no longer needed just because you go to higher res. that higher res is on larger screen with very little increase in ppi as already pointed out so of course AA is still needed. hell depending how close you sit even 4k on just a 31.5 screen still does not mean that no AA is not needed.

looks like a strong card, but it all depends on what the reaction from NV is going to be,
GK110 is clearly competitive against this card, NV can play with prices, maybe higher clock, a full GK110 card? also how far is NV from releasing a new GPU?

still, this card for the moment would make the 780 and specially Titan pointless for the most part (the main thing is if AMD can fix the CF + Eyefinity I guess).

^^that's my question, what will this card do to prices. Decent cards are finally under $250. I simply refuse to spend more than that for a decent card.

Btw instead of FXAA, try an SMAA injector

Yup, FXAA is horrid, making high res textures look like its back in 2001. Ive been using the Radeon Pro's SMAA injector to good effect in a few games without proper MSAA support.

It should hit 30% average, obviously a few games may have massive gains but its not normal to expect a same node refresh to be that good. Still, not impressed with the prices going up and up. On a mature node, with a 420mm2 die, GPU should be ~$400 and still profitable. They are both milking consumers hard.

I guess AMD knows they can get away with it since the 780 and Titan is ridiculously overpriced.. they just slot into the "slightly overpriced" segment and call it a day. Can't blame them, they need all the $$ ASAP, AMD's CPU division is again late and underperforming.

If so the real winner is.... The consumer. 7950 and 670/680 sli/cf still out performs this proposed card for much less. Paid 300$ for TWO 7950's on CL not a month ago

I just want prices to get competitive again, i'm so sick of such huge premiums.

Edit: in the high end market.

Well for us that OC this make the story a bit more complicated as a OC 290x if the numbers holds up might give such solutions a match and I know I rather have a single card than sli/crossfire.

Looks to be a good card from what I hear so far, lets hope the prices drop all over!

At the prices of AMD's current lineup I don't see how a ~$600 card is going to put much downward pressure on any of them. What nVidia does with prices is up to them. The nVidia premium is so high in NZ it doesn't matter at all to me.

I can see this being a tossup. The higer the res the closer a 290X will get to 7950CF and it games were the 7950s are weaker, I can see it being faster. So It doesn't seem cut and dry from a performance perspective. Although if you factor in how cheap 7950s and 7970s are going right now, it does lean towards the 7900 cards.

If ATI keep sorting their framepacing issues then Crossfire 290X may be a viable option for 4K gaming. Spec wise the 290X appears to fit the bill of what I would have thought upcoming 4K capable cards would be..

I guess I'm going to have to buy one and test it head to head against my Titan. The loser goes on the chopping block.

I went from a 7970 to a Titan. Basically wanted a gaming card, but also one for CUDA apps and the change was worth the jump. As for the difference between the 780 and the titan having extra 3gb of ram for 3d rendering is a huge bonus for complex scenes (using Octane 3d in Lightwave).

And before you lot start questioning my sanity going from a 7970 to a Titan, Octane 3D using a Titan is about x10 to x20 faster than my six core i7 970 rig for rendering and that is being on the conservative side, it is insanely fast.

Why in the heck would AMD go back to the square edge cooler? How could they have already forgotten what that does with crossfire temps?

I noticed that, seems they have very short memories at AMD. Why they have insisted on preventing that fan from sucking in air in crossfire mode is beyond me. A two slot exhaust cooler is good. Leaving a 3mm gap between the cards for the ingress of air when in crossfire is simply moronic although I know many newer board have a bigger gap between the two primary PCIe slots.

I guess it just depends on the person, like the whole 120hz vs 60hz crowd. Most just don't notice the difference. I doubt you would hear anyone complain with Doom came out the square pixels because no one cared about it.

I have a free chopping block around. Just send me the loser and I will take care of him

According to the leaks performance is anywhere from 30% to 80% higher than 7970. At least in the games they tested. The mem controller gave. The new 512bit they're using is smaller than the old 384bit one. That's the only thing we know so far.
Wut!? Are they eating magic beans for breakfast?
