Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has started mass production of its 2nd-generation 8-gigabyte (GB) High Bandwidth Memory-2 (HBM2) with the fastest data transmission speed on the market today. The new solution, Aquabolt™, which is the industry’s first HBM2 to deliver a 2.4 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) data transfer speed per pin, should accelerate the expansion of supercomputing and the graphics card market.

In accommodating the growing need for high-performance HBM2 DRAM, Samsung will supply Aquabolt to its global IT customers at a stable pace, and continue to rapidly advance its memory technology in conjunction with leading OEMs throughout a wide array of fields including supercomputing, artificial intelligence, and graphics processing.

Not sure when we could expect to see this implemented with GPU's, but maybe with Navi? The performance is pretty impressive here but, if anything, it's not going to help the cost of high end and enthusiast graphics cards to settle down.

Nope, we might see it with a Vega refresh... just depends on availability I suppose. What a nice upgrade to go with a more efficient GPU though. I don't even want to ponder how much it would potentially drive the price up; especially with the lower quantity of cards that AMD and its subsidiaries are producing. I feel like HBM2 cards may continue to be harder and harder to find.

Recent interview with Scott Wasson @ AMD:

but he (Scott) did mention that next generation, which is Navi, will be available after Vega 7nm (which officially only goes into Radeon Instinct). The sampling starts later this year, but it seems unlikely for actual products to be available in 2018.

Gamers who wish to buy Radeon 600 series cards may need to wait a bit longer. AMD could potentially launch smaller Vega and replace Polaris 10 GPU, or launch Polaris with GDDR6. Whichever option they choose, it has not been confirmed yet. The worst scenario means no Radeon 600 this year.

wondering if this Aquabolt memory will be trickling into these scenarios...

Interview is here (Videocardz)

Sounds like another dry year for AMD in the Flagship class, but with Miners buying up all stock it doesn't matter really. They're selling every chip they can roll out, and that's great. Hopefully with better power tuning and process refinement we can see better mainstream products this year.

I don't know much about mining, but I remember reading one time that there are dedicated mining ASICs that can do the job much faster than a GPU or CPU. So I'm wondering why don't miners buy those cards and leave the GPUs alone?

I believe that's only for Bitcoin currently.

The current profitable coins being mined today have memory bandwidth requirements for hashing. All of them require more than 4GB of GDDR5, and some of the more bandwidth intensive coins scale well with HBM.
