Claim: Jane Fonda betrayed U.S. POWs during the Viet Nam War.

Status: Multiple:

* During a 1972 trip to North Vietnam, Jane Fonda propagandized on behalf of the North Vietnamese government, declared that American POWs were being treated humanely and condemned U.S. soldiers as "war criminals" and later denounced them as liars for claiming they had been tortured: True.

* Jane Fonda handed over to their captors the slips of paper POWs pressed upon her: False.

* In 1999, Jane Fonda was profiled in ABC's A Celebration: 100 Years of Great Women: True.

ROFL there is no liberal media bias I tell ya!!!

Excellent. He fights for his country, one of its tenets of which is free speech, and then spits in the face of somebody who exercises it. Bravo indeed!

His exercise of free speech to spit in her face!
Except that's illegal, which is why he was arrested.

I'm being devil's advocate anyway. I know too little about Hanoi Jane to have a real opinion on it I do like when celebrities are down trodden though, so there's a  for that.

I help out at the local center once in a while and it's amazing how pissed the vets still are

You are the second person to post this. Clearly it is about as credible as the Swift Boat Veterans.
I love this quote ... "We won the war on the battlefield but lost it back home on the college campuses and in the city streets. "

It just blows my mind that this wacko would say that Vietnam was a battle against millions of American Citizens

and
"From 1969 until the end of the war, over 20,000 American soldiers lost their lives in a war that the United States did not have the resolve to win"

Resolve? Reolve to do what, send more troops over to die?

That site is a sad excuse for news and history. I see no bibliography, verified primary sources, and the clearly is going to be pro-war and military biased based on the domain name.

I disagree with her stance on Vietnam by the way.

I don't think going to the enemy and helping out the enemy machine is quite exactly having "an opinion." I would imagine in 1780 she would have been shot for treason. Too bad we live in today's world.

treason for what? we were never at officially at war with anyone.

it was a dumb thing for her to do, but "dumb" pretty much describes the whole vietnam period.

Stop!!! Reason is not allowed in this thread...
Umm... it is not necessary to be at a declared state of war for charges of treason to be levied against someone.

Maybe you should build a time machine and go back in time then?

I was about to say something directed towards you and her that would have gotten me a 2 week vacation, but I will try to refrain from that. This issue probably gets me more worked up and angry than any other in recent American history. She could have had any opinion she wanted and paraded around the country yelling about how bad the war was, but as soon as she went overseas and they paraded her around as a propaganda tool, while her "fellow countrymen and women" (I use paranthesis because she's not, in my mind, American at all) were being tortured to death, she went beyond just "having an opinion."

She's the lowest form of scum, and I salute that man for what he did. I'm sure he wanted to strangle her, but was willing to settle for that.

And by the way, I KNEW this would happen eventually.

She visited a prison camp in North Viet Nam during the war. One of the American prisoners had compiled a list of the prisoners there, and slipped it to her when she shook his hand for a North Viet Nam photo op. She smiled, and handed it over to the prison camp commander. I shudder to think what happened to that man afterwards.

Again, myth. Though she did take home letters to the families of POWs.

what she did was wrong but it was 37 years ago. personally i think it's time for folks to stop living in the past and move on. my dad (who didn't fight, by the way) turns red in the face every time he hears her name, and who does that hurt? there is a reason why so many religions promote the importance of forgiving those who wrong us....

Here's an idea: don't talk about sh1t you have no idea about. If I knew nothing about Hitler and someone was posting about how stupid he was and I came in and said, "But seriously, didn't the Jews deserve it?", that would be equally as stupid as what you said. "Oh, but I'm just playing Devil's Advocate on a subject I know nothing about." Then STFU!

As the American POWs returned home in 1973, they spoke out about the inhumane treatment and torture they had suffered as prisoners of war. Their stories directly contradicted Jane Fonda's earlier statements of 1972. Some of the American POWs such as Senator John McCain, a former Presidential candidate, stated that he was tortured by his guards for refusing to meet with Jane Fonda and her group. Jane Fonda, in her response to these new allegations, referred to the returning POWs as being "hypocrites and liars."
Whoa, that's pretty ballsy. McCain said that and she's calling him a liar? :Q

In Colin Powell's book, he offers some reasons the Vietnam War was lost. Hanoi Jane and liberals weren't amongst those reasons.

And also Bravo to Jane Fonda who met and mingled with the enemy on an anti-aircraft gun?

I don't expect you to know everything about war, what it's like to be in one, and such but at least you are keeping the status quo for stupid posts. Bravo!

Yah and the other person that posted this link up the thread was.... ME :Q fvcking moron.

Actually I lend some credibilty to this site because it does not assert the POW note passing rumor. I never asid this was a cited document. Actually it's the first page that comes up when you look up Hanoi Jane on google. But I did a quick skim through and the facts seemed as they were supposed to be, given my prior knowledge on this subject. This page is actually very unbiased compared to other pages out there.

Other than that I will not get drawn into a debate about Vietnam here.

I wasn't even there and I hate her.

Amazing? Yes. Amazingly biased and false statements in that website. no Biblio. or soucres cited, proven false charges, written by someone with no actually credentials....

If some ditz from Hollywood wants to go parade around with some viet soldiers then that is fine with me. She was not the person firing weapons, drafting soldiers, or causing two countries to fight a war of mindless slaughter for a decade.
If you are going to your grave for hatred towards an innocuous attention whore then you have more serious issues.
