Out of the two models, which is better? Both currently priced at $200 at my local retail store (Samsung is up front $200 and Viewsonic is $250 with a $50 MIR).

I have a 955DF and love it! Samsung is arguably putting out the finest display outputs you can get right now. I am sure someone will disagree but in my testing it doesn't get a whole lot better than Samsung.

Anyone else like to comment on the Viewsonic vs Samsung battle?

Really think I am going to give Samsung a try since my last 2 monitors (one being a store bought one and the other being a refirb one sent to me when the first stopped working right) were the Viewsonic A90f. Both of which had a high pitch whine when in standby, power saving, or off mode (rigged it to a power strip so I could kill all AC to the monitor and stop the whine when the PC is off). Also both went defective the same way where the brightness of the monitor would fluxuate.

I have the 997df and god, I love it!

One of my better computer purchases, for $200 you can't go wrong.

I have the older Viewsonic A90PF+, (or something like that), and it has been a great monitor.

I have a A90f+ that'll be going on a year old at the yend of the year. It has been turned on more than it has been off, and at one point I gamed a lot on it. It works very well at 1600 X 1200, and overall I am pretty happy with it. I can't get myself to dump it for an LCD yet, because I'm afraid I may not match the performance.

I use two A90f+ (the predecessor, practically the same) monitors on my desktop for dual screen, I love 'em. From what the Samsung users are saying, I don't you could go wrong with either one.

I'd get the viewsonic anyday...the 997 really sux. If it uses the same tube as the A90F+ though I wouldn't get it...too many problems with that model.

edit:Hm...yea looking at viewsonics website, the A91 only has a one year warranty just like the a90f+...so almost positive it uses the same tube as the a90f.

Aside from the lack of a decent refresh rate at 1280x960, I haven't had any issues with the A90f+ that I've been using since January 2003. It is a really nice monitor - for a CRT. I looks kind of sucky now in comparison to my wife's new 2005FPW, but that is just the nature of the CRT beast.

Loss of color after a few months and also a loss of ability to keep geometry settings as well. I know someone who has one and they've had those exact problems.

My color and geometry are still fine after almost two years, but maybe I just got lucky. I have been using the UltraBrite mode sparingly since it is a bit too bright for normal desktop use, so maybe that has helped its longevity.

Wow, that's weird. I was sitting on newegg just the other day comparing the specs between those two monitors, deciding which one I'd rather have. I'm probably going to go with the Samsung myself, although I'm sure I'd love either.

Only if you are running an LCD.

You need at least 75Hz for a CRT to look decent, although anything below 85Hz usually gives me a headache after a few minutes. Not sure what the A91f+ maxes out at with an 85Hz refresh, but on my A90f+, 1152x864 is the highest I can go with the 85Hz refresh rate I want.

im currently using the samsun 997df and its a pretty nice monitor. there are a lot of little quirks that would make you think twice though.

first of all, its quite difficult to get the geometry right, and you're almost gauranteed to have a slightly curved edge, since the only reason that the monitor is a flat screen is because the glass is flat, so basically it just curves out the image.

secondly, and this one is probably the thing that bugs me on a regular basis, is that there is a loud oscillator whine when displaying certain colors on your screen. typically, i hear it when seeing white on black or black on white. this is at 1280x1024 resolution btw. at this res, the refresh rate is actually supported up to 85hz, but the noise while viewing those particular colors becomes pretty much unbearable. i use it at 1280x1024 @ 75hz, and though the noise is still pretty audible, at least its not as bad.

anyway, what im saying is if you can bear the noise then go for the monitor, it's too much of a pain in the ass for me to return it to samsung so i cant really do anything about it for now. it's also a pain that the nearest monitor service center for samsung is about 300 miles *points somewhere* thataway.

Yeah I bumped down to 1360 X 1024 @ 75. I can actually tell a big difference.

Well I guess i can give a good review b/c i own both of these monitors.... Im using the 997DF as my main monitor and the A91F+ as my second. I use Ultramon to create 1 desktop First off both are a pain in the ass to set the geometry. It seems almost impossable to get the picture perfect in windows. The picture on the 997DF is great for games and text. The viewsonic makes text blurry but looks good in games. I have both monitors set to 1280*1024. The 997DF set to 85Hertz and the A91F set to 75. Im running them both from a radeon 9700 pro @ 351 core and 330 memory. Between the 2 I would go with the 997DF. I did not buy any of these monitors they where both gifts. There really not ones that i would choose but there better then what i had. Personly I would go with a high end 22" Nec Like the FE2111sb or a highend Sony. There ok monitors for what you pay. With computers you get what you pay for.............
