Hello,

My first post!!!

Question is I'm looking for a new 17" monitor and I would like to keep it under $225.00. I have seen a Viewsonic E771 monitor and have read some good things about it on the net but was wondering are Viewsonics good monitors?

Or, would there be a better brand to choose from or, a better model to choose?

Monitor will be used at home for Internet surfing and some Quake2 and Quake3 but I'm not a hard core gamer.

Like to hear any thoughts you guys have or recommendations.

Thanks

It is impossible to say any manufacturer is good or bad in such general terms. Many people have good experiences with certain brands others do not. So no matter what brands people recommend do your homework.

Every unit produced is unique and, like fingerprints, no two are identical. Even the highest quality monitors occasionally don't perform as promised. That's why it is worth some time to take a look at the service and warranty options that come with a monitor. The standard warranty is a great way to judge the manufacturer's confidence in their product. While three years tends to be standard look, some offer longer warranties. Also look for warranty enhancements like "advance replacement" and "on-site service." While you may not choose to purchase these services, how they are priced is an excellent indication of the confidence the manufacturer has in their products. In my opinion, companies with low confidence in their product line tend to charge higher prices for enhanced warranties.

Look at the technical support side as well. Call and e-mail the companies tech support group. First time how long it takes you to reach a human and then ask them about the monitor you are considering. You don't want to sit on hold; you want to talk to knowledgeable people. They aren't trained to "polish" the answers like sales rep might, and you'll get a sense for how technically competent and knowledgeable they are should you need them after the purchase.

Good Luck

I have an A90 Viewsonic monitor and I am quite happy with it. The one thing that I can say about monitors is don't go cheap. That monitor will stay current longer than that $300 videocard you splurged on. If money is tight go to best buy and pick up the 19 inch magview monitor. It is 279 - 50 mail in. Trust me those two inches come in handy

1.) Make sure the specs on your new monitor are adequate for the software resolution(s) you want to run.
2.) Make sure the new monitor matches up with your video card's capabilities. (even the moderately priced modern video cards will probably support resolutions that exceed the monitor's capability, but that is not a problem.)
3.) Remember that a refresh rate of at least 80Hz to 85Hz is needed to prevent flickering. Even if screen flicker is not noticable, it will cause eye fatigue. So, only the supported resolutions of both the video card and the monitor that meet the 80Hz+ should be considered.
4.) "Dot pitch", or its equvalent, should be no larger than .28mm, and the smaller the better (like the grain in print film)

All that said, If I had 2 Ben Franklins, and wanted a 17" monitor, I'd get the Hitachi 615. (I have owned, and was happy with, an E771)

Hey I'll pass along a find I found by accident last night. I was looking at the Dell site, and they had a 19" Samsung 950P for $204.95. This is new, and it does 1600 X 1200 75hz. It will actually do at max setting 1920 X 1440 at 64hz but who would want to use that? Recommended setting is 1280 X 1024 at 85hz. It has a .26dp.

I'm waiting to hear about shipping, but this looks to be an awesome find. There are no rebates to deal with, or pricematching, just a great simple deal from a reputable vendor (Dell).

I'd look into a Samsung before a Viewsonic.

edit: Yes 750P is great. It's not a flat screen but if that doesn't matter than I'd get that. I actually like the 700NF the best but it is more than your specified budget.

Thanks guys, you have given me some more options. Don't stop keep them coming. How are the samsung monitors?

I'm planing on building a computer so I don't really know about what video card this new monitor will be attached to yet.

Is there an advantage to a flat screen? I have never had a flat screen and not sure it I would really like it. My old moniter is a NEC X15 or something that I have had for about 10 years.

Feel free to recommend your favorite monitors and I will do some research.

Thanks again.

Eagle that one was the 950P, the 19" er. A much better deal than the 17" at that price. A flat screen would be nice, but a 19" for the same price as a 17", I could live with a little curve.

Really? Damn what a great deal on a GOOD 19"!!

Flat screen vs. non-flat... kind of hard to describe. You would be best off just going to a Best Buy, Compusa, etc... to just compare flat vs. non-flat. For me, the flat screen has more realistic looking images and the image goes all the way to the edge of the screen.

Generally speaking Viewsonic are supposed to be quite good. Having said that my friend decided to get one and it developed tube problems after the first week of use (corrupted display and a burning smell). He got a replacement and it did exactly the same thing as the first monitor did. In the end he settled for a cheapo 17" monitor which has been working well since he got it.

I have a Viewsonic 19" PF795 flat screen. It is the PF790's big brother and I got it for the same price from Onvia 8 months ago. I see Viewsonic get slamed a lot here but I can testify mine is SUPURB in every way. At high resolutions of 1024 x 768 and over 100mzh all my games crystal sharp and the color is nice, that is where the PF795 shines over the PF790. Please also consider that your video card will influence greatly any monitor. A low performance card will keep the monitor from doing its best. I'm running mine with a GeForce DDR...NV20 later I hope.

Also consider for a little bit more a 19", the extra real estate makes a BIG difference.

I can recomend Viewsonic. I'm very pleased with mine with everything I do.

Hold off on that Samsung 19" monitor. The Dell offer is for a model number 95P+, which is actually their Samtron 95P+. This does not look like the above mentioned Samsung 950P, which would be a steal at that price. I gotta look more. BTW the iformation is in Dell's Auction heading, "Cant find what your looking for?", new items, CRT monitor, page.

Well, too bad.... As I suspected, the 19" is Samsung's Samtron 95P+ for $205. Dell is also selling Samsung 19" 950P for $293. Samsung has $30 rebates for 5 of their monitors and $50 rebates for 3 monitors.

I'm looking at the Samsung 955DF or the 955SL (with Monsoon 500 speakers) for $350 at Outpost.com. The 955DF has a $30 rebate. Also looking at Staples NEC MS95 for $300. If anyone has an opinion on these monitors or another they'd like to recommend at the $300-$375, I'd appreciate it.

I would get the 955DF over the SL. You do see the refresh rates though? They are a bit low for me but for others it might not be a problem. Otherwise it is a great monitor with awesome text quality and good colors for a shadow mask (read: NOT AG!).

I heard the SLs had blurrier text quality and overall not as good as an image. If short length monitor were no different than regular monitors aside from the obvious, wouldn't every monitor be a short length?

Wow, my bad. Dell didn't say Samtron, they said Samsung and listed the 950P's specs, and put a picture of the 950P, that clearly said Samsung on the monitor. Kind of a blurry bait and switch deal. They then took away the picture of the 950P on the listing for the 950P so you couldn't compare. But if you look up the specs they list for the $204.95 monitor, they match the 950P and the picture matches. Either a mistake, or a blatant misrepresentation.
