ViewSonic VG191 19" LCD for $800 + shipping and tax

My VX900 arrived today via UPS Ground. It was shipped from IN.

I haven't opened it yet since I was on site all day and now need to go out for the evening.

However, I'm wondering if I should figure out a way to sell it and get that 19" Planar LCD from Ecost. The specs seem to indicate that the VX900 uses the same internal LCD as the 19" Planar, but the Planar has a SVideo input and a USB hub in addition to the analog and digital inputs. Anyone seen reviews for that 19" Planar (CT1904N)? Yeah, the image quality has lots to do with the driving electronics in addition to the panel itself, but I've always generally thought the Planar LCDs were decent. Any opinions?

I got mine today. It looks pretty nice. I also have a Planar 19" so I need to decide which one to keep. The Viewsonic is more stylish looking and quite a bit thinner. The specs on both are supposedly the same but the two LCD's look slightly different. I'm trying to figure out if it's just an adjustment I need to make. The Viewsonic seems just a tiny bit more grainy.

Also...so far no dead pixels have shown up on the viewsonic and the Planar has one dead pixel. So that may tip the viewsonic in my favor.

Did you get the VG191 or the VX900?

I was thinking the same thing about the Planar too. You might be able to get a better deal if you use the 10% off coupon from Dell and then PM it with an AMEX card not Blue anymore) with BVG. Planar makes a CT1904N and a CT1904Z the only difference is the N has the S-video and the Z doesn't. The only thing I don't like about the Planar is that they have speakers and I won't use them, kind of an anal thing, but that's the way I am. Anyway, it's good to hear that some people got a monitor.

Im thinking of purchasing the seperate TV tuner offered by viewsonic. That way I can get all the inputs i need including S-Video and coaxial for TV.

The Planar comes with DVI, S-Video and analog D-sub. I just wonder about picture quality and ghosting (I play a lot of games).

Thanks for the review link. In the past, Viewsonic and Planar have used different manufacturer internal flat panels.
I think the VX900 to VG191 to Planar CT1904N is a different issue because they are supposed to use similar SuperMVA panels inside.

I've been thinking about that seperate tuner. I currently drive my monitors with a Matrox G400 Marvel (builtin Tuner) and a G200 MMS. Now when I use the Marvel for TV viewing, I have to keep the viewing window on the primary monitor. With the separate tuner I could use the VX900 as a secondary display and still keep TV on it. Something worth considering.

Alright, tell me more Kuhlman. Which do you like better, the VX900 or the CT1904N? Did you figure out what caused the graininess? And are you testing them both via VGA or DVI connectors?

Well, Compaq pushed back my delivery date again. :disgust: The thing that really gets me is that they never notify me about the dates changing or anything, just push it back and when I check my status I notice it has changed now for a 4th time. The new date is 5/14. It also bothers me that they have a "soft hold" on my CC for the monitor for over a month now and they haven't delivered anything yet! :| I guess they don't want to give me a chance to be a repeat customer so I can use a discount in the future, even if this deal goes through their customer service is going to take a HUGE hit on all the ratings sites I can think of. The Planar is looking REALLY good right now.

I think I got that email the other day. The body of the email is pretty empty, but there should be an attachment with a txt file containing the shipping details if indeed it shipped.

I could try to run Quake 3, but it might not really be a worthwhile test. 1) My VX900 hasn't left it's box yet. 2) I don't own a gaming rig anymore. The VX900 is going on a development/business machine that's a PII 450, 256MB RAM, with a Matrox Marvel G400 +DVI addon as the primary video. I think Quake 3 would pretty much bring it to its knees to the point that you couldn't see ghosting since I'd probably get under 10fps.

I'd really like to hear more from Kuhlman before I open my VX900 and decide to keep it.

Looks like we might get our 19" windows after all.
I think it's processing at the moment becuase i cant track it through UPS but I'd give them couple more hours.
