Well I just snagged a VX910 for my bedroom PC, replacing my older A70f+ (CRT )

I have to say I am a tad disappointed and may bring it back to the store.

I am hooked up through DVI currently.

Colors seemed slighty washed out, whites are not WHITE. Just doesn't have that same impressive look as the Dell does.

Doesn't even compare to my 2005fp.. Especially since it's only 1280x1024

It ( vx910 ) does not have any dead pixels , and the backlight is almost perfectly even.

All and all, what's a good 19" ( retail stores ) that would beat the VX910?

EDIT: Might go for the higher quality 171s.. Only a 17" but should be a better panel..

171s

A dead/stuck red pixel has also appeared.

BOOOO!!!

Anyone here have a VX910?

Thoughts?

I am going to swap this one, mainly because the red stuck pixel shows on white ( always see it while surfing )

I am willing to look at the Samsung 915v even though its 25ms..

However it's VGA, and if have a 19" or larger it must be DVI.

It's good to see the lower response times coming..

CRT's are dead. ( for the most part )

Just played MOHAA and it seems pretty good..

Maybe some SLIGHT ghosting.. But overall not too bad.

I now have 3 dead/stuck pixels as well..

Going to swap this one out, or find a simliar model (Gotta be retail for this one )

I have a VX910, and all in all, I'm pretty happy with it. It is my first LCD, though; therefore, I don't really have anything to compare it with. It may just take adjustments in the monitor or graphic cards control panel to get the color right.

Ya after messing around with the brightness/gamma/contrast it does seem better..

I will probably end up keeping the same model, just a different unit..

How long have you had yours?

If it's a TFT/TN panel, it's a 6-bit color monitor wich uses dithering to get 16.2 million colors. That's why you don't get the same quality from a TFT/PVA or TFT/MVA panel (8-bit monitors with higher color gamut, 16.7 million colors).

Basically, if you're a gamer, get a TN panel as they have lower response times (under 12ms now).

If you want color accuracy and overall excellent picture quality, get a PVA/MVA or even am IPS based monitor. Apple and Lacie (two of the best LCD monitors) use IPS panels. Put a 20" IPS monitor from Apple right alongside a 20" TN monitor and you'll see the difference.

TN is also the oldest and cheapest LCD technology there is. Good for everyday office applications and some gaming, but not intended for the professional at all.

Hope this helps!

I have the same Viewsonic model and I gotta tell you, I love it! I haven't experienced any of the problems that you have. In fact, since seeing the perfect white of my 910, every other monitor I've used has looked downright yellow. No dead pixels or problems with ghosting. Bad luck for you or good luck for me, who knows.

Great post.. Good information.

Basically, if you're a gamer, get a TN panel as they have lower response times (under 12ms now).

So the Viewsonic is a TFT/TN panel but listed as a 16ms/25ms ( toss up on the webiste )

I take it most of the NEWLY released TN panels are 12ms and below..

The Dell 2005fpw is an 8bit panel correct? Uses the same panel as the Apple display ( similar LG )So i assume it is an IPS panel? That would explain why it looks SO good..

I hooked this up next to the Dell and it is a clear difference. While the VS looks good, it's not on the same level as the 2005fpw.

Either way, still a nice monitor. Got my replacement and it has one stuck pixel on the bottom right corner. Only shows on black

Bought it at CompUSA with the Carry in Replacement -> Covers 1 dead pixel...

So whenever something better in this price range comes out (Samsung 193P would be nice ) I'll use the store credit..

Until then....

BUMP!

I don't know if the Dell uses IPS panels, but it certainly does not uses TN hardware.
IPS and MVA are much more expensive than TN, you can see this by simply looking at the prices for 17" monitors from Samsung (for example):

Samsung 710N (TN) about $300 or less.
Samsung 173P (PVA) around $450-500.

Keep in mind that PVA is a propietary MVA technology from Samsung, so you'll see PVA only from them.

IIRC, there's an updated IPS technology (S-IPS, I think) that has lower response times.

Most people wont notice the difference from switching from a CRT to a TN LCD. That's why LCD popularity has grown so much.

However, it took a while for the professional graphics industry to switch to LCD (and most professional still use CRTs). Take a look at Apple, they have the best looking LCDs I've ever seen. Go to an Apple Store and you'll understand what I'm talking about. All their displays are IPS panels with improved resolution (100+dpi, higher pixel density).

Always be carefull when buying an LCD. If the website of brochure says something like "More than 16 million colors", chance are that it is a TN panel as they don't want you to know that it cannot display 16.7 colors.

Well I have hooked the 2005fpw directly next to a 20" Apple display and they are just about identical..

Either way, both a far superior than the TN panels..

Again good post, good info..

I was looking to grab the Samsung 193P (Dell 1905fp) but it was just a bit more than I want to spend for a backup machine..

You wouldn't think that difference in 16.2 and 16.7 could be so much..

Is there any way to tell if a panel is TN/IPS/PVA/MVA?

Because I'm pretty sure it's NEVER a listed spec..

The only manufaturer I've seen that lists the panel type is Samsung, i.e.:

Type: a-si TFT/TN or a-si TFT/PVA

In general, if the specs list 16.7 million colors, it's probably MVA or IPS.
If it states less than 16ms response time, it's probably TN.
If it has less then 16ms AND 16.7 mil colors, it's gonna be expensive.

You can always email tech support and they'll probably tell you.
