Thanks AlanS, I was looking for something like this after I missed the Gateway / Dazzle deal. Just a "heads up" that the rebate's going to TCA Fulfillment in New Rochelle, NY. I haven't had a problem (yet?) so I'm pretty comfortable with this deal.

this is a great deal... I just bought one from gateway for 40 - 20 rebate = $20 AR.... from some no namer manufacturer....

This is much better since its $20 AR plus its from a reputable manufacturer. You have to invest a little more though but in the end you save $5...

Went ahead and ordered since my Gateway deal that was supposed to be here on the 6th hasn't even shipped yet. I called them up to complain and the rep said 'Oh, it looks here like it's ready to ship'. I said, 'Great, but it was supposed to be here on the 6th, is there a tracking #?' 'No, we won't have that for, oh, maybe 48hrs'.

Me: I'd like to go ahead and cancel my order.
Her: OK, I went ahead and put it in but it might not get stopped in time, if you receive the package you'll have to refuse shipment.
Me: Fine.


So, that was my gateway horrible shopping experience... that's not to say the rep was rude, just that they have no idea how to run a business if they think they can delay shipment forever with no status to the customer.

So, I placed the order w/ amazon -$5. coupon still good...

It's not supposed to ship until the 20th and then I have 5-9 business day shipping so at the earliest I'm going to see this is Dec 3rd or 4th (since they ship from Cali and it takes the full 9 days to get here!).

If I Get the Dazzle one from Gateway I'll give it as a gift to my wifes Sister.

[edit] Received the Dazzle one today, 12/5/02, only one month after it was supposed to get here. And 15 days after I cancelled my order w/ gateway.

Fortunately the rebate is still good, so, it'll only be $20 and will be an OK gift but dayam that was awful service. [/edit]

That depends on the type of flash memory you're using and the speed of the card by that particular manufacturer.

If you're using CF, dpreview.com had a good comparison of CF card speeds here.

Tomshardware.com also did a nice review of card readers here. Unfortunately, this Viking unit was not evaluated.

I went ahead and ordered it. HOWEVER i just found out the rebate is going to NEW ROCHELLE , NY ... most probably TCA. I hope i get my rebate though, i still have a rebate owed to me by TCA that was supposed to be sent last march. *sigh* crosses fingers. Thanks.

I actually got mine about the 20th, actually shipped/got here much sooner than estimated. (I'm pretty sure it came on the estimated ship date).

I can't compare it to any other readers, as this is my first one, but, it works rather well. Came w/ drivers for 98/NT/2K. Says it works automatically with ME and XP, and indeed it detected and installed w/o a driver in XP.

Adds 3 drive letters to 'My Computer'. Worked well reading/writing to my Lexar and Viking C/F and Lexar Memory Stick media. Don't have any Smart Media or MMC to test.

Transfer speed seems to be close to the 1.5Megabytes/S as advertised. Took about a minute to XFER ~128MB of data (I didn't do an exact test yet--so assumption is max is 1.5MBytes/s and that's what it's doing w/ media capable of that speed).

It's much faster (>10x faster) than the built in transfer of my Minolta S404, both using USB 1.x interface. Using the camera it's at least 30minutes to transfer the same amount of data. For $20 for a 6in1, definitely worth it.
