Apparently you missed the 2000 NBA Dunk Contest...because this fact was well-established before Carter dunked over the Olympian.

Actually, the *over* part is a little misconstrued!!

There have already been quite a few basketball players with higher vertical leap than Carter. IIRC, they measure Vince Carter's vertical leap at 42". That's the exact same vertical leap as a little guy named Spud Webb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (anybody remember him?)

Not to mention that back in the 70's & 80's, Tony Thompson used to take dollar bills off the top of the backboard with HIS..........FORTY-EIGHT INCH vertical leap!!!

Imagine sticking another half a foot of air under anything you've seen Vince Carter do!!!

Plus..........as we all know..........a sometimes more impressive feat.............would be watching the actual defiance of gravity that Michael Jordan used to have when he was able to hold his mass in mid-air longer than anybody to date!!!!

While perhaps only a true 42" vertical himself, Michael could carry the length of an averaged-out 36" vertical leap farther and/or longer than anybody else in the NBA. It'll be a while before we see another one of those.

(i.e. "Hangtime" Compare Michael Jordan to Kobe Bryant and you'll see that Kobe cannot hold his elevation for neeeeeeearly as long as Michael used to)

How can you really hold elevation? Gravity is constant, so the only thing that would extend "airtime" is the acceleration of the body upward or the distance travelled upward.

you could increase the "hang time" by not putting your feet down.

it's not really a matter of how long you stay but how well you use the time up there. michael made it seem like he was up there for a very long time because he did so much once he got up there.

vince is another of that type. he has major ups and good hang time.

I remember MJ's hangtime was explained on a show a while ago. Its an illusion in that he lifts his feet while in the air. Most people do not. The actual time in the air was no different between MJ and others.

why must you bring this up. this is one of the sore spots and i have bad memories about this

knicks are an organization that wants to draft the least talented players in the NBA, they love to trade for old guys and sign them for long term contracts

sigh

where is Wiess by the way?? they drafted him 4 years ago! :|

Yes, it is. In general, blacks have a higher ratio of "fast twitch" muscle, that is better for jumping, running, etc. Most caucasions have a much higher ration of "slow twitch" muscle, that doesn't respond as quickly, but develops more end power at it's limit.

Each person is born with a prediliction for a certain ratio of one type to the other in their body, but with a LOT of specific training can alter it somewhat.

P.S. - and Vince isn't, ultimately, a wuss. He WAS doggin' it up in Toronto, that's a fact - hated his situation, wanted out, and didn't play hurt. But as a Nets fan I'm really happy to see him - I think he and Kidd are a great pair, 'cause Kidd WILL kick his butt if he doesn't work hard, but on the other hand Kidd doesn't want to out-ego him or grab the spotlight, which is what Vince wants. Kidd wants to run the floor and not score, Vince just wants someone to feed him balls. Very complimentary, really...I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with a healthy Jefferson.

Others may have been able to jump higher, but that's half the show. Noone imo has had the same agility and athleticism while in the air as VC [used to have.]

he's a wuss for the reasons you mentioned above.
