Hey SirStev0, how did this turn out for you? Have you had your court date yet? I just got busted this afternoon in the shitty little town of South Boston, VA going 40 in a 25. It dropped from 45 to 25 in a matter of feet and since it was my first time driving through this shitty little town, I didn't know I had to practically stand on my brakes to get to the speed limit. The trooper wrote it up as "violation of 46.2-874, Speeding 40/25 M-R". I have no idea what the M-R stands for though.
Guess I'll have to get a lawyer to handle this, but what did you end up doing? I'm from NC and haven't had a ticket in 11 years. This sucks major donkey nuts.

Because speed limit is way to slow. I never drive below 80 with speed limit being 65

are you even old enough to drive yet?

I am, live in VA and haven't heard of it either. If it happens it's definitely not a common occurrence.

Maybe you aren't aware of it, because it doesn't affect you? My co worker went to court in Prince William. The court had mostly people from out of state, and plenty of them got jail time. Stop by one day & see for yourself.

I plan to change my driving habit when I go through VA. I usually unplug my radar detector when I get to VA. That ain't happening now.

If you're out of state and not planing on ever coming back, why you ever go to court. Just ignore the ticket unless you live in state with which Virgina state shares driving record. No state will extradite someone for misdemeanor

My court date isn't until the end of August. I talked to a friend of a friend of a friend who happens to be a lawyer. He told me to NOT talk to the police; they won't do anything. He also told me to talk to the DA's office; beg them, plead them, give them your story, and hope they have mercy and drop it to another offense. If this fails, I am to talk to the Public Defenders office. VA has to provide me with legal council. He told me to call them daily for the first couple days, and weekly after that. Don't annoy them or be a dick (they are defending you), but they are public defenders and your traffic violation is meaningless to them unless you make it meaningful.

This is excellent advice. You should write a book and spread your wisdom.

I hope that was sarcasm... fyi it's not a misdemeanor.

This. If nothing else, this thread has reminded me to avoid VA at all costs... even if that means driving out of my way an extra hour or so if I ever have to go down south.

Actually it is. Believe me, I have the summons right here.

I have already driven an hour more 4 times in order to miss VA. Unfortunately it is the easiest way home for me to my new school; so now I have that extra hour drive.

Listen to this idiot - he knows what he is talking about.

Other than the fact that many people have explained that the states have cross references in which the non-ticket payment will generate a bench warrant and/or cause you to be unable to get a license renewal/change.

Possibly also affecting your vehicle registration.

Just stay within an acceptable speed.

It is difficult to get from the North East to the South without going through that state.

Unless you are talking about being in Western PA at the start, you are in for a 3-4 hour detour each way.

Rolling down I79 will force you into VA, unless you shift further west to I75. You could take your chances on I77 (40+ miles) and then head east back toward I95

How many people vote in VA? 10? I can only imagine the demographics that encouraged such strict regulations. I picture a bunch of old farts who can't see passed the stirring wheel.

If the governor of NJ tried this shit he would be lynched.

PS. I personally don't speed around trucks just to get to the next exit. I slow down if all things I wanted to get off at the next exit. I likely do some crazy shit myself, but that wouldn't be one of them.

Let me clarify. 79mph. Regardless of speed limit.

Getting pulled over for doing 80mph when the limit is 70mph is WORSE than getting pulled over for doing 79mph when the speed limit is 55mph, in VA.

Rather ridiculous when driving 10mph over the limit on one highway holds a much more severe penalty than driving 24mph over the limit on another.

I have been able to skirt around using I79. The fact that the speed limit is 70mph and WV doesn't have absurd laws makes it a considerably better option.
