Virtual Memory Minimum too low (error message) when shutting down

I recently reformatted my HD and reloaded all my applications. I have done this several times and am always happy with the results. I'm happy this time too with one exception. Every time I shutdown, I get an error message that says my virtual memory is set too low. It says it is going to increase the size if the swap file and then shuts down. I went into the settings for this and set it to auto. I tried manually setting the file size to 500mb (I have 256M of Ram). I am still getting the message. I don't see any problem with performance. I just want to get rid of the error message (and any problem - if there is one).

Anyone have any experience with this or ideas. Thanks in advance. Ron

Go to the system control panel, then the advanced tab, then under performance the settings button. Go to the advanced tab. Make sure both Program check boxes are checked and then click change. Click "System managed size", then the set button. Click ok to close all the open windows. Hope this helps.

Thanks. This was the original setting (and I'm sure the default). I changed it to manual and set the virtual memory to 500M (twice the ram) and I no longer get the message. Problem solved - I guess. After getting your post, I tried going back to what you say above and the error message is back. Looks like I'll just return it to manual - even I don't like having the thing not working the way I think it should be. Thanks. Ron

I have a similar problem. When I boot my system in windows xp pro everything is fine. However, when I open any application my cpu usage ramps up to 100% and stays there. Then the system acts sluggish after that. Everynow and then I get a message saying that my virtual memory is low. But I've tried both the "system managed size" and the "custom" size with no luck. The last few things I've done to the system were: updating with the windows xp sp1, installing mcafee anti virus, and adding a HP laserjet off the network. Any suggestions? In the past, I used to be able to burn cd's while downloading files and playing games on-line at the same time.
