Virtual memory??

hi there... i'm running an xp 2600 512 ddr win xp pro sp1... been running fine for about a month...and just starting from today, i got a warning that virtual memory is running low.. so i open up task manager and see explorer.exe taking up about 300mb..?!?! quickly went for reboot, and after a few minutes explorer was at 300mb again... even turning off computer this problem doesn't go away... anyone know what could be causing this?

Wow thats one hell of a chunk of memory for explorer to use!!

Have you installed any new software in the past few days or any Microsoft patches (they have been known to break more than they fix too often)

If so try removing the software and see if it reoccurs.

I don't know of any virus that causes this problem but it's always a good idea when something strange like this happens to do a full virus scan with fully up to date definitions (if you don't have a virus scanner then go to www.trend.com and use their online scanner and then go and buy one... I'm not trying to be patronising btw just covering all the bases).

Other than that you need to look back at what you were doing just before this started happening to see if there's some clue that we can use to diagnose the problem

you need to let windows manage your page file, then you won't be getting those errors anymore, go to the system properties, under perfomance, select advanced and where it says page file set to let windows manage it. as your needs increase so too will your page file.

That doesn't solve the problem of why explorer is using 300Mb it just hides the symptoms. I think Scorp would prefer to eliminate the cause rather than shove it under the carpet and hope nobody notices the big lump in the middle...

whats your cpu usage like at idle?

and windows managed page file is really slow, set the min and max both to 1.5 times your ram and youll be fine usualy....but fix your problems first
