On a powerful hardware (CPU+GPUs), and for use case of machine learning on Linux server with gaming on windows 10, which virtualization approach will provide highest performance, 1] bare metal, with host OS being lightweight, and work being done on Linux server and windows 10 VMs or 2] Linux server host directly, with windows 10 VM. Note that in either case GPU needs to be passed to VM. Which virtualization sw recommended, virtualbox, proxmox, xen, kvm, ESXI, HyperV ? Read about these, but confused now, need expert advice

KVM on linux probably hast he best support for passing through graphics cards these days. But if you don't know linux kind of well to start with it can be a bear to setup. ESXi definitely can do it, but it some gotchas you may not be able to work around. In particular, running linux VMs with a passed through graphics adapter is tough to get working.

proxmox uses kvm IIRC, never used it myself. virtualbox only had experimental gpu passthrough support last time I checked.

The closest thing to turnkey in this space I've used is Unraid, which is based on kvm slackware linux. But you'd have to pay for that.

How about running two computers, the good one running Windows 10 for gaming, and the "old" one running Linux? You can place them on the same network and log in to Linux from Windows to do your Linux course.

By far the least complicated solution: Windows host (Pro+) and running ML in Docker.
That way you get optimal gaming performance and fairly small loss in ML (compared to Linux host).
Docker containers can access the GPU and this stack is well documented and very popular.

Sure, you can run a hypervisor and both systems as VMs, but that seems like a huge overkill in your case and a big complication - also not without performance loss.

And why not the good old dual boot?
