I seem to remember that Koreans were a lock on the spelling bee some years ago.

Being good at spelling bees is a bit like being good at Jeopardy -- it's one part smarts and five parts studying. The best and brightest are likely better than average at spelling but are no more likely to win a spelling bee than a janitors son or daughter that studies hard at it.

It's not race or sex or nationality, it's hard work...

There are idiot savants who can do math, play Bach etc but cant function in basic ways. Calculating math, spelling etc are not high intellectual functions despite basic degrees of difficulties. The most emotionally disturbed people retain the most information. Artists have the most psychotic illnesses. Its no accident people from "worker bee" cultures do the best at these mechanical intellectual functions. I don't think a lot of Americans white, black or otherwise really care about spelling bee kings and queens.
