Visioneer OneTouch 8100 Scanner ?

Has anyone EVER been able to successfully download the updated software that is at their site for Windows ME ?I've been trying all day and am not getting anywhere.:disgust: Worse yet I already know I will need the patch because the buttons are not working on the scanner so that means another life time trying to download that.

I have a Dell computer that is 92% system resources free before I connect and I have 255mb of ram so I know I have plenty of memory.Has anyone else had problems ?

I just picked one up (thanks to Anandtech Hot Deals forum) and I use Win98. Works fine. Already posting pics to my site. I looked here and it says there is a prob of one touch buttons not working, in Win98. Doesn't mention 2000.

Have you already tried uninstalling and installing again? Do you get the icon in the tray? Does it configure properly?

I'm still trying to download the software.

I've been downloading since 10:00 pm and am now at 82% . Then I guess it will take another day to download the patch! I'll post as soon as I get everything downloaded and see what happens.

I downloaded the driver for Windows ME and also the patch that is suppose to give use to your one touch buttons .I cannot do ANYTHING with this scanner . . It keeps asking me to unlock the scanner but the scanner is already unlocked.The buttons still don't work and the one button is stuck on the email button with the amber light.I get "not supported" messages whenever I hit an option tab. I'm so depressed., I don't know what to do.:frown:

I have this scanner and so does my stepson. His was giving him the unlock message same as yours.

I took it apart and there was a piece of double sided sticky foam that had come loose and was under the carriage assembly. It had the carriage locked up and the belt would ratchet and make a horrible racket. Took out the foam and all is well. Still don't know where the foam was supposed to go.

However, I feel you have a software/driver problem.

Assuming you originally installed the software prior to plugging in the scanner, you may have gotten a bad download. The software and drivers are to be installed prior to plugging in the scanner. You should be able to do an upgrade/patch install without having to do anything special.

Their site appears to have been redesigned since I was there last. It's running very slowly too. They may be having server problems.

Will the scanner work from the PaperPort software? The buttons are for convenience. See if it will work from the software. If not, do an uninstall and reinstall.

I would try the download late this evening if possible. Traffic should be down.

I deleted all the Visioneer Paperport , the update, and the patch ,and all registry entries and am starting over again.It took me about 5 hours today to get 80% downloaded then my dang ISP booted me off so I had to start ALL OVER , AGAIN !:| Right now I am downloading the Update and am at 71% downloaded . 333 bytes/sec !!!!! I figure by 11:00 If I stay connected I will be able to put all this together and try it over again. I sure hope it works this time.I have never been SO frustrated trying to download anything!:disgust:

did you unlock the switch under the unit? It comes with a safety switch. The idea is you lock it when transporting it and when you hook it up you unlock it. It's supposed to protrect the components inside from moving around too much. Wonder if it would work being dropped from a 50 story bldg. Wanna try?

It sounds like you already did the switch thing. Can you exchange it? I wonder what it does internally if you try to run it with the switch on and them off. Can it inadvertantly damage some of the software/drivers?

You are right about the download tho. I have dsl and the best I was getting was 4.??kb per second.

The scanner was unlocked (underneath)when I installed everything.The scanner worked one time on another computer that had Windows 98.Then somehow by updating it on the other computer the scanners buttons got stuck on email. Anyway It was no longer working on the other computer so I thought I'd try to install it on my computer .I got the scanner this past Xmas and since it was working and I have no room to store a box ,the box was thrown away. 86% downloaded

Wow! I feel for you. If you're using a 56k download, posting that post just cost you 20 min of your download!

I'm sure after all you've done, sounds like the right stuff, you'll get it working!

All done .After I installed the driver update and was told to shutdown and restart I got the error message, Onetouchman has caused an error in MFC42.DLL . I installed the patch, rebooted a few times, ran scan disk but I get the MFC42.DLL error message whenever try to do anything with paperport. I went their website and asked the Visioneer Knowledge Portal and it did not know anything about the error and could not help.Any suggestions?

Call them up. I have before. Short hold times and they straightened me out....twice. Others here haven't had such good results though.
