PNY wouldnt really be a loss, but Visiontek has some of the better warranties for AMD, correct?

Visiontek does not surprise me. When was the last time you saw a factory OCed or non-reference card from them? They only have one 4890 model out as far as I know, and no press releases indicating any other products planned. Their claim to fame -- the lifetime warranty -- has now been taken over and surpassed by XFX, which has also been far better pricing-wise (in general, in line with the other brands). Never mind their XT, XXX, Black Edition, etc cards. Visiontek has been pretty stagnant lately.

PNY does surprise me. They've been running quite a few gamer-oriented promos and contests on their graphics card division website. Not the sort of thing you expect from a company looking for a way out.

I think this will be the second time that Visiontek has dropped from the graphics card scene.

Yep. The first time they sold Nvidia cards. This time around they're selling ATI cards. What will they come back with the third time? Matrox? S3?

So I guess their lifetime warranty isn't as good as I thought. Figures.

PNY is THE exclusive Nvidia partner for workstation products. They acquired that privilege when they bought out the dying Elsa several years back.

I bought a Visiontek GF4 Ti4400 back then and shortly after they went under. I didn't think this would happen again... lol

You realize what this means right? Your the cause of their failure, there can be no other explanation.

Bitboys Oy if I recall is now owned by ATI.

Ah the old cause n' effect conundrum.

Incidentally, I just weighed myself after reading your post, and the scales shows that I've gained 2 pounds. Therefore your post must be the root of obesity.

I have been hearing lately that Visiontek has become very stingy with RMAs. Of course, that's just from a couple friends, so I don't know if its endemic.

I'm pretty sure they only warranty to the original purchaser with receipt - sucks for me since my 4870 died - and I bought it used w/o receipt. I won't buy another VisionTek card..

Ask those who bought Visiontek GeForce cards.

Its a rumour atm, who knows.

Exactly! BITD when I owned a computer shop (for a decade, now still running under different ownership) a couple times a year people would ask us why we were going out of business... because they heard about it somewhere or other. We never did track down the source of those rumors, but we did literally outlast every other competitor in the whole county.

Heck, BFG had a few of its own going-out-of-business rumors last year. This one about NVIDIA cutting out partners (including BFG), and another one that made the rounds in the industry and was spread by a certain individual.

Oh yeah, and a few weeks ago someone publicly on HardForums offered to help put BFG out of business.

Why do people say/do such stuff?

Ahhh, Quadro cards. Yes, PNY is the exclusive for retail Quadro products, but system builders can get OEM Quadro cards that aren't from PNY.

BTW, according to BFG's CEO that is not how they got the exclusive Quadro business, which I think happened around 2001 or so.

That's like all other companies with lifetime warranties (except XFX, which extends to second owner but receipt and product registration still required).
