uh...i would hardly call compusa's customer service any better than best buys...compusas employees might be a little more knowledgeable when it comes to actually computer stuff...but that's cuz that's what they specialize in. i've had crappy csrs at both places as well as good service...i think it's moronic when someone says that best buy customer service sucks because of a pricing error, another one of those things where people just start jumping on the bandwagon, i don't believe any of you people who say you are boycotting best buy

I got in on the Bestbuy Radeon 8500 deal. I picked it up on Sunday and finally found the time to install it today. I took off the shrink wrap and I was shocked to find a used generic Geforce2 MX card inside, the DVI-VGA adapter was missing also. Naturally I went back to Bestbuy to exchange for another one. They refused to exchange it or take it back. The manager just told me to return it to ATI and insists that it is ATI's fault.

This is not a Bestbuy-bashing post, I understand that BB cannot just exchange or credit to whoever who walks in and claims that he did not get the corresponding item in the box. I just want to warn fellow AT'ers that there may this paticular branch may not check their returns properly before putting them back on the shelf or there may be some unscrupulous employee switching the items in the box. When I asked the operations manager if Bestbuy employees open return items that are shrink-wrapped, he says they do. But when I spoke to another employee there he says NOT ALL employees do it.

I looked at the shrinkwrap carefully and compared it to brand new Radeon 8500 and discovered that there is a difference in the thickness of the shrinkwrap. The culprit who switched the card probably has access to a shrinkwrap machine. On carefull examination, the seam that is sealed by heat looks different too, it is seems more melted, not professionally done but a casual glance will not detect it easily.

Update 3/26/02 : I received a reply from Corporate HQ and they said there is nothing they can do and asked me to go back to the store manager if I wanna pursue the matter further.

If Bestbuy offer the best deal on an item, I would still buy from them, I have nothing against saving money but I would rip open the shrinkwrap to check it right after I pay for it at the register.

Concerning the comment by FSUpaintball that any CUSA rebate problems are not due to CUSA, but due to the manufacturer, please consider this: CUSA *CHOOSES* which suppliers to use. If they opt to sell items from suppliers/manufacturers who give (or claim to give) rebates, they accept some of the responsibility (at lease moral responsibility) of the rebate. Pushing blame onto the people whom you've chosen to team with is completely unacceptable. CUSA intentionally advertises the products with the rebates prominantly (sp?) noted. By doing that, they are condoning however the rebate-giver operates.

Think about it - If you buy a $100 piece of equipment from CUSA with an advertised $50 rebate, then the rebate never comes through, you have still paid CUSA $100 for that equipment. Understandably, CUSA will get hosed by some manufacturers on rebates, but if CUSA continues to advertise that manufacturer's product with rebates, they are ultimately at fault, and will catch any negative vibe.

(This is not intended to be a rant on CUSA, but on ANY business that uses the same business practices. FSUpaintball just happened to mention them by name.)

I called them today to check the status on my rebate, and they told me "they never received it" and want me to "resubmit everything again"

ive grown to love this thread
it gives me a chuckle
i dont disklike bbuy for the pricing error although i think their story is fishy
i dislike them b/c they never have their hot sale items in stock even if u r one of the first few customers
i dislike them b/c they force u to complain and yell at the poor manager if u really want the item
and yes i will consciously buy from other vendors
sure if they have some new dvd, my kids are begging for it, and im in a hurry, i might buy from them, but they are not going to get my real business
