Jewel of India - 15 W 44th St (Really good, but a little pricey)
Tandoor - 9525 Queens Blvd (Really good, cheap too, but its in queens)
Baluchis - All over NYC (Its a chain so its hit or miss, but my experiences have been real good)
Thai:
Two places I can think of are Pongsri and Spice. However I didn't remember the address, and when I went to look it up seems they are both chains! (Learn something new everyday) So yeah find one of those and it should be good.
These are the ones I go to:
The Pong Sri - 244 W 48th St. This has a more traditional Thai restaurant look.
Spice - 60 University Pl. This aims to for the bright, contemporary look.
Both serve Americanized Pad Thai, but still quite good nonetheless. I feel PongSri is stingy on the shrimp though.
Right next to Pong Sri is a Saigon 48, which I'm a fan of because of the trendy look, large portion and cheap prices. Also on that block is Aoki, which has has some nice rolls and is decently priced for Manhattan sushi. For real Chinese and Vietnamese food, check out Chinatown. They have surprisingly few Thai or Japanese places there though.
I've been to Bombay Palace, Jewel of India and a few other midtown Indian places, but I'm not a fan of Indian food.
faglioni's, 39th and lex. nice little italian place.
I'll second this place. I didn't think it was a great place and it's a bit cramped, but I thought it was decent. I love their tiramisu, even though I doubt it's fresh.
Don't eat pizza from a chain if you're visiting NY! I have nothing against chains, but if you're visiting NYC you should eat somewhere that you can't eat at malls and airports across the country.
I strongly agree with this. There are too many excellent pizza places to name, but even many local pizza shops (not all - Pizza Mercato sucks) has better pizza than the chains. I like brick oven pizza though. My favorite is probably Grimaldi's if you don't mind the walk across the Brooklyn bridge. There's usually a line waiting out front.
Some other stuff:
Uncle Nick's is has decent gyros, souvlakis and other Greek food. It's located in Hell's kitchen.
Arriba Arriba is across the street from Uncle Nick's. It has decent Mexican food with a free drink and tortillas during lunch.
