No offense xanis, but those two places are tourist traps. the food there is crap.

Don't eat pizza from a chain if you're visiting NY! I have nothing against chains, but if you're visiting NYC you should eat somewhere that you can't eat at malls and airports across the country.

Baluchis - All over NYC (Its a chain so its hit or miss, but my experiences have been real good)

Thai:
Two places I can think of are Pongsri and Spice. However I didn't remember the address, and when I went to look it up seems they are both chains! (Learn something new everyday) So yeah find one of those and it should be good.

These are the ones I go to:
The Pong Sri - 244 W 48th St. This has a more traditional Thai restaurant look.
Spice - 60 University Pl. This aims to for the bright, contemporary look.
Both serve Americanized Pad Thai, but still quite good nonetheless. I feel PongSri is stingy on the shrimp though.

Right next to Pong Sri is a Saigon 48, which I'm a fan of because of the trendy look, large portion and cheap prices. Also on that block is Aoki, which has has some nice rolls and is decently priced for Manhattan sushi. For real Chinese and Vietnamese food, check out Chinatown. They have surprisingly few Thai or Japanese places there though.

I've been to Bombay Palace, Jewel of India and a few other midtown Indian places, but I'm not a fan of Indian food.

faglioni's, 39th and lex. nice little italian place.

I'll second this place. I didn't think it was a great place and it's a bit cramped, but I thought it was decent. I love their tiramisu, even though I doubt it's fresh.

I strongly agree with this. There are too many excellent pizza places to name, but even many local pizza shops (not all - Pizza Mercato sucks) has better pizza than the chains. I like brick oven pizza though. My favorite is probably Grimaldi's if you don't mind the walk across the Brooklyn bridge. There's usually a line waiting out front.

Some other stuff:
Uncle Nick's is has decent gyros, souvlakis and other Greek food. It's located in Hell's kitchen.
Arriba Arriba is across the street from Uncle Nick's. It has decent Mexican food with a free drink and tortillas during lunch.

I used to work at a bank right next door to Tandoor's and used to go there for lunch all the time. Excellent food and the managers used to bank with us so it was free for me. Very nice atmosphere.

Been to Baluchis on Queens Blvd also and liked it, but I thought it wasn't as good as Tandoor.

btw, most Indian places around Midtown are very bland

edit: for Italian, I highly recommend Carmine's.

Jekyl and Hyde is annoying as hell...only tourists go there.

I'll second that. Plus the food sucks.

Cara Mia

Good little Italian type place; perfect if you're in the theater district; not too hard on the wallet either.

Just saying "Manhattan" is a little vague, depending on what one's willingness to travel is. Pricey can be relative too, I just expect New York to be more expensive than most other areas. Anyway, can't speak much for Thai or Indian, but as far as Italian in the midtown area goes, I've liked Cellini (A dish call Imbustata was great) at 65 E 54th, Da Ciro at 229 Lexington, and Bice, also on E 54th.

Normally I would have said almost every restaurant in NY is great, but my last couple trips there I had a couple not-so-good experiences so I do qualify it a bit now, but NY is still an awesome place for food. If price is no object I can heartily recommend the Akaushi Kobe beef at Uncle Jack's Steakhouse on 9th Avenue, amazing meat with a price to match, but damn is it good.

Indian: Jewel of India, The east 6th places are iffy but cheap (my favorite is, oddly, Baluchis, which is a chain), Tabla is great but not really authentic and can get expensive
Thai: I'm odd and don't like authentic thai, I like the bastardized american version. BK has a few fun places, including SEA, which has a manhattan branch. I'm not calling it "good" but it's yummy. Spice is nice, Peep in soho is a good date joint.
Japanese: I really like Tomoe (the real one, not the fake ripoffs) on Thompson street. It's called pricey but I don't get it, it's always been a good deal to me. Oni? I think that's the name. Very pricey but great ambiance. Mizu was actually pretty good but our group of 8 was chased out because we only left 15% tip, our waiter demanded 20.. dick..

Shake shack is supposed to be amazing, though I haven't been there. PJ Clarks is pretty solid too (great potato buns) and their oysters are spectacular.

I gotta throw in Azuki if you like sushi - if you buy $15/person they give you free sake as long as you eat. It's a great way to get fvcked up before going out.

You can get a sandwich there the size of your head, and its really good too.

Seconded... very famous deli, definitely something to try in NYC

2nd ave deli has much better pastrami. it may not be the size of your head, but it tastes much better.

Shake Shack has a good burger. not worth the long wait in line though.

Tomoe sushi imho is waaaaay overrated. always a line out the door, and nothing special about their sushi.
