Visiting the Phillipines?

Anyone been there? What's the best time to go and what activities did you get involved in?

I went there a couple times when I was in the Navy.

Prepare to have a large selection of potential Brides lined up for you. A friend of a friend went there for a wedding of a guy he went to school with, met his current wife while he was there. Funny because before he went he thought the school friend was insane for picking a mail order bride....

No, but the "mail order bride" business, at least in the US as it used to be, is. It doesnt exist any more.

edit: do you have any idea the visa requirements for a girl from the Philippines to come to the US? And for marriage?

Sadly I never learned Tagalog but it didn't interfere with talking with my cousins. I remember reading somewhere the Philippines was the 3rd or 4th largest English speaking country per capita? When I visited in July, we spent most of our time in the Laguna province and yes the heat was relentless but I got use to it. When we did leave the a touristy area, she mentioned that I shouldn't talk. As it would be a give away and could potentially be robbed lol.

Quite well actually. And it certainly isn't hard enough to continue to be used as a method to pick up a wife or to scam the system to gain expedited citizenship / permanent residency. While, it isn't the still the traditional "male order bride" system of years past, there are plenty of matchmakers and people simply willing to pay for marriage and sponsorship.


Also, OP, make sure to look for a bar singer.

No, not really. First, when you say citizenship is expedited, compared to what? It takes minimum of 5 years with a marriage visa. In the 5 years there are 3 important interviews. The first, for the initial visa, to establish that the two people actually have a relationship (i.e. you have met in person (pics, hotel and flight tickets, etc), emails, letters, etc, the second (after 2-ish years), that the couple has remained married, living together, etc which you must provide proof of (i.e. loans together, pictures, shared bank accounts, etc), and the third, is to prove essentially the same as the second. Not to mention all the background checks, etc. INCLUDING one of her from her own country. A girl cant just hop on a plane and fly to the US with a visitors visa as 95% of the population is ineligible.

And matchmakers? Pfft. Websites with filipinas looking for marriage are no different than Match.com. Do you consider ALL women who met their spouses online to be "mail order brides"?

It is quite obvious you do not, in fact, know how difficult it is to go through a legal immigration with a path to citizenship.

edit: with that said, does abuse still happen? Sure. But it certainly isnt easy. Or cheap. And the chances of remaining in the US are slim. Also keep in mind immigration rules vary with each country. I can only speak for the Philippines.
