Hopefully the Leadtek won't come in too much higher than this.

<----holding out for Leadtek's usual better 2d, the better to see you with.

I'll give you guys a point of reference...

I have a P4 1.9GHz@2.128GHz with 512MB of PC800 RDRAM and a GeForce 2 Pro (210/450). When I play MoH:AA at 1280x1024x32 with everything maxed, I feel like I could use some extra power. And on the snowy woods level, it started b!tch slapping my system HARD and looked like a powerpoint slide show at times. Needless to say, I can DEFINITELY use a GF4 TI4200 or better yet, I think I might even go for a TI4600. But the TI4200 is the BEST bargain by far. SUPER performance at a reasonable price. Shoot, I remember people paying close to $500 for a GF2 Ultra! It's gotta suck that a BRAND NEW TI4200 for <$200 will smoke the hell out of it. But that technology for you.

LOL.
It's funny when people with Pentium 4s consider the Ti 4600 to be too much money for a video card.

How much of a noticeable difference will I see when upgrading from a GF2 MX on my P3/800 (256MB RAM)?

Is it true that I need at least a 1.3GHz to notice any difference?

At the risk of repeating myself...

The time has come where some games are finally starting to stress the AGP 4X spec. If you have AGP 2X on your board, I wouldn't really recommend dropping a GF4Ti in it. Secondly, the 4400 and 4600 both use new low-voltage designs. The 4200 uses the GF3s power-guzzling power architecture - so you might wanna check out first to make sure if your board can support both 3.3V and 5V current.

If you have a 1Ghz CPU or less, you MIGHT wanna think about dropping in a 1700+ (or at LEAST a 1.3Ghz TBird) or 1.6A Willie (for you Socket 423 users you're kinda SOL) in addition to the 4200. ALL the Ti's eat as much processor power as you can feed it. The faster the CPU, the more polygons it can draw per cycle, the more polygons, the more performance you get out of the 4200. But PLEASE, don't pair this thing with anything less than a Duron 800 or Coppermine 866. The gains you'll see performance-wise will be negligible if you're coming from a GF3, and all you'll notice if coming from previous generations is a slight speed boost and prettier displays.

Overclocking the Tis doesn't get you much in the way of performance increases. Visiontek covers their cards for their LIFETIME...don't screw that up by epoxying ramsinks on there just to get one or three more FPS. Video cards are the third hardest worked devices in your system after the CPU and Hard Disks. Having two that have failed on me when I DIDN'T overclock them, I can say it IS a pain when they go down.

DestroyaUR: Forgive me if this sounds stoopid. I was under the impression that AGP 4x runs @ 1.5v and AGP 2x runs @ 3.3v. In your post, you state voltages of 3.3 and 5. What cards use 5v? Isn't the GeForce3 a 1.5v card??? It's just that I haven't heard of a 5v card.

Well I actually consider the TI4600 a pretty good price, that's why I'm considering one.

You can get a GF3 Ti 500 for less than 120 from pricewatch.

OK so i'm about to get a customized dell from the online site, however they do not let you choose not to get a video card obviously and i do not want to get the 4600 from the site cuz they charge like 400 for it...

so i was thinking about just getting the cheapest one they offer, then taking it out and putting in this 4200....

so here are my two questions

1) is it correct that this is more powerful than the GF3Ti500, if so by how much

2) on pricewatch site, does that mean that you'll be able to get this card at this price late april early may, or can i get it right now??? thanks!!!!!

<< hey guys...do u know if the geforce4 support dual monitor displays? >>

Yes, and nVidia's name for this feature is "nView".

Scenarios:
  • CRT & CRT (via DVI to HD15 adapter)
  • CRT & anolog LCD (HD15/DVI-I)
  • CRT & digital LCD (DVI)

Do you know of any dual-dvi high performance vid cards out there? The only ones I have seen are the quadro 4 and the matrox g550 which are too much and too little performancewise (respectively).

Yes, nVidia touted a prototype card with dual DVI outputs, and so far the only company I know of that has this configuration for sale is Gainward.

If only that were true.

It's the Ti 200, not the Ti 500, that is less than $120 on pricewatch. The Ti 500 is still $199 and up.

Obviously, the Geforce4 4200 is going to be a great deal, but it ain't here yet, and patience isn't my strong suit these days. I didn't want to risk going into late May or even June before getting the performance boost I wanted. And there's still hope to sell my Voodoo5 for something worth the trouble, before it's totally obsolete.

Yes, GF4 Ti4200 (64 Mb version) is faster than GF3Ti500. GF3 Ti500 chip clock is at 240 Mhz and Memory Clock at 500 Mhz whereas GF4 Ti4200 chip clock is at 250 MHz and Memory Clock at 500 Mhz. But there seems to be much better benchmarks for Ti4200. Gf3 Ti500 is much more expensive than the anticipated price of GF4Ti4200, which gives you a reasonable margin of performance. But I would suggest that you hold on till August where the card gets a bit cheaper. This card will last you for a decent amount of time. And yes, you have to wait till late April for the card to come out
