FSU, the reviews are in!

I just read this one at Tom' Hardware:

Read the review

Bottom line: it looks like a good performer and maybe a really good value, depending on where the price settles out.

Enjoy!

Are your current games so slow as to require GF4? Might want to hold off a bit...

This definately looks like THE board for the summer. As fast or faster than a GeForce3 Ti500 for half the cost. The 128 suggested retail is $199, the 64mb suggests at $179. The memory on the 64mb is clocked a drop higher than the 128mb making it a possible superb deal. But, for the extra $20 I'll probably pop for the 128 just in case games start using the extra memory.

I guess I should hold off on the Radeon 8500... Soon I will upgrade my GF2 GTS.

$185! is a lot of money. $(185 x 184 x 183 x 182 x ... x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1) to be exact. A lot of money.

Lukfilm quoted "Are your current games so slow as to require GF4? Might want to hold off a bit... "

HAHA>> yea.. actually i really noticed a slow down in jedi knight 2 I'm running a geforce 2 gts pro 64 meg with mem clocked at 465..
I built a system very similar to mine with a ge3 ti200.. gained 1000 points in 3dmark.. needless to say.. I'm going with this card as soon as it comes..
I'm at the curve in the upgrade cycle that says it's time.. always want a bit more card than games are ready for.. not vice versa.

Unreal 2.. SOF2 etc.. all these new games coming up are going to tax ge2's

Here's my advice, if you have a Geforce3, dont bother upgrading. If you have a Geforce 2, then its worth it.

I just finished Jedi Outcast (Jedi Knight II) with a Voodoo 5, and performance was noticably choppy at times at 1024 resolution. The swamp level really struggled.

I am ready to upgrade now - now that I've found a game I wanted that can't do 1024 smoothly. I think I'll be ready for the GF4 4200 when it comes out (and has a week or two to see where it settles in price).

GF4 Tis are largely CPU intensive (much moreso than GF3s) - I've seen some reviews quoting that if you don't have at least a 1.3Ghz chip to feed it, you're not gonna see stellar improvements speed-wise. Plus, if you're running a 450, that means you're most likely running a i440BX chipset-equipped motherboard, which is only capable of AGP 2X speeds...the GF4 has over 60 million transistors in it, over twice the number in your P2/P3...I can almost assure you that in all cases, the card will be working at less than 30% efficiency waiting for the 450 chip to draw enough polys to render the image. Plus, in my old 440 board, the AGP spec isn't 2.0, so voltages are iffy. 4400s and 4600s are supposed to be low-voltage cards, but the 4200 uses a GF3 power design, which requires much more juice.

TCWO seems to be giving some damned good combo deals recently...you might wanna delegate that 450 to being a file server or secondary box and upgrade. You should be able to get this card plus a mobo/chip and ram for less than 500 bucks and see a HELLUVA lot of improvement.

Hope this helps. I just didn't wanna read your reply without giving you some advice.

EDIT: Found this particular combo in another thread and thought it decent to post.

Pretty decent deal.
