was going to buy the clie, because it has a 320 x 320 screen, but doesn't the visor have this? (can't find it on their site). or are people just moving to the pocket pc now. all comments appreciated. thanks.

Definitely go with PocketPC if you can afford it (or justify the cost).

What are your needs and how do you hope to use your PDA?

If you want the all around best PDA, get a Pocket PC such as the Compaq iPaq.

using it mostly as an organizer (second brain) and for avantgo. thought the color clie would be nice and a lot cheaper than the pocket pc, and the clie has a brighter screen and better battery life. i don't need an mp3 player. thanks.

The overall best PDA is still the Pocket PC but it sounds like a color Sony Clie would meet your needs.

Just make sure NOT to pay retail, there are several places you can usually save anywhere from 10% off to $50 off often times with free shipping.

Check the Hot Deals forum every now and then search for Clie and you should see a few deals.

My GF has a Casio Cassieopia and it has a better screen than the Ipaq and it's overclockable.

New stunning Clie's should hit the US market shortly, I'd suggest you wait for those as you'll be kicking yourself - one even has a little keyboard.

However if you're thinking about the current models, I have a Clie (evenings) and an iPaq (daytimes) and I can tell you that the Clie display is marginally better in terms of viewability, although smaller. the image transfer thing fazes me about the Clie. I've never used the music player facility as I usually have a minidisc for that.

All the organisation features of the Palm-based Clie is inferior to the iPaq. To someone who's chained to Outlook as I am, generally I find the iPaq utterly superior as a work tool. It's also more flexible in so many ways. If you're a true geek, an iPaq is also hard to beat because of the expandability.

The Clie is a plaything by comparison and works well as a personal organiser in truly that sense - personal, not for business. It's smaller, easier to carry, more stylish, has a nice music interface and longer endurance. As I said, I use it when I'm out of work - digging out a loaded iPaq is a style faux pas. Since in terms of PC laptops I'm totally Sony and I also have a Sony digital camera, the Memory Stick comes in useful for data interchange. Shame I can't buy a memory stick adaptor for Macs...

the new sony is available, but i find the diminutive keyboard a joke; i've had years of practice with graffiti and prefer it.

any thoughts on which ipaq is the best bang for the buck? (i'm still undecided.)

The iPaq has the largest screen of all pocket pc's but the Casio's, I believe show more colors than the iPaq's.

To give you some background, I'm an IPAQ 3635 owner.

To fit your needs, I think you'd be best off with the Clie. The screen is fantastic, and will be quite a few bucks cheaper then a pocket PC. Besides, if you're using it like an organizor, the PalmOS is simply more efficent at that task then pocketPC.

Now, if you think in the future you might want more, like movies, music, or high quality games, definitly consider a pocket PC. Otherwise, the clie seems to meet your bill.

I've been thinking of getting the clie t-415, but the biggest complaint is the screen. It's hard to read in low light, or without 'proper' lighting. I'm inclined to agree a bit.
edit: more on the screen.

If you wanna spend more, the t-615 seems to be much better in that regard, and just as thin. I've love one, but I'd like mp3 playback as well.

So, I might try and hold out and drop a load of cash on the upcoming NR70 which is just insane.

leaning toward a pocket pc. anyone have any thoughts on the casio linked above? seems like last year's model, but do i really care?

seems to me there are two big issues:
-- battery life
-- screen brightness and clarity

i doubt the new intel processor will change this much, since notebooks still suffer battery life problems after a zillion intel upgraded/optimized for mobile chips.

anyone have experience with any older jornada units? these seem to have the best battery life.

The older Jornadas are a slower processor speed, killing IMHO what a pocket PC is for. The older Jornadas are only 133mhz, which just isn't enough if you plan on running emulators or divx. Also, keep in mind that with an Ipaq you can over/under clock it. Overclocking obviously gives you the speed, whereas underclocking will increase your battery life. For the money, I don't think I could justfy anything under the 206mhz clock.

looks like the ipaq 3800 series is a tie for the lead with the casio and toshiba units. for some reason cnet didn't rate the latest jornada as well. seems the 3800 series has overcome at least part of the battery life issue. anyone know why the jornada is panned.

btw i see what you mean about the faster processor. the only thing worse than buying one of these things cheap is buying one with a processor that drags. long after you've forgotten how much you paid, you'll still notice how slow the darn thing runs

Well, I've played with the new Jornada, and these are my views:

1) Best battery life of any pocket PC I've played with.

2) I really don't like the looks or material composition of if. It just looks and feels cheaper then the Ipaq devices

3) I really like having an integrated cf slot all of the time.

4) Perhaps the worst issue is the dusting, these things are worse then the old Ipaqs with catching dust under the screen from it not being sealed. You can go hair fishing if you're lucky, but more often then not you'll need to have HP replace it.

Me, being the shallow college student I am, went with the ipaq more or less because of the looks and the non-dusting screen. I don't know if NFS4 has any pics of his Jornada, but he returned his because of the dusting. He is probably the handheld expert around here as he trades up every month it seems. I think right now he's working with a Maestro, which is a nice and under rated little unit.

for the present i've decided i'll suffer with NOTHING except a crummy paper organizer. my logic is to wait for the new intel chip to hit in a couple months, which should knock the current pocket pc's down a couple hundred dollars. it's just hard to justify spending 0.5k on a deck of cards when i can buy a good mainframe for the same price. and yes, i know we're talking apples and oranges. but still . . .
