Vista 512MB RAM requirement

I can run more but it slows down. To be fair I was running Word and Excel 2007 and they are not very conservative with system memory.

Don't listen to this guy, that's absolute idiocy. I've seen several 512mb Vista units come through the shop already, and even with tuning, they run like CRAP. Not just slow, but deathly slow. This joker probably is used to untuned basic crap OEM XP loads anyway, with 800 useless items clogging up the system on the taskbar, and 5 minutes to get to the Desktop without the hard drive thrashing itself to death.

Vista = 1GB to not be utterly unbearable.

One thing missing on this thread is experiences from folks that are running vista on a system with 768 MB ram---which is a fairly common ddr configuration.---even if they are running a 64 MB on board video and on board sound, it still usually leaves 703 Mb ram to play with.

768 is a reasonable platform to run Vista on, just go easy on the effects.

Lol... Although I don't claim to be an expert, I am no n00b either. Trust me, Vista non-Aero is fine for basic stuff with 512MB. I am speaking from experience, whereas you probably aren't. 'nuff said.

Well, I've probably worked on half a dozen Vista systems w/512mb (notebooks w/shared video memory) that have come through my shop. So I'm definitely speaking from experience. Of course, I may be a bit spoiled in terms of system response, as I wouldn't personally use Vista on anything less than 2gb, and optimally 3gb. 768 is passable for minimal use, and 1gb isn't terrible unless you're a gamer.

But seriously, Vista w/512mb is like XP w/128mb, or Win2k w/32mb. It eats the hard drive alive, and you can't open more than one decent app without the whole thing crawling to a standstill.

At idle with nothing open and aero disabled, mine uses over 600MB. I'd say the minimum is 768MB (512+256) to run most applications smoothly with no disk swapping, 1GB if your a big multi-tasker.
