I can run more but it slows down. To be fair I was running Word and Excel 2007 and they are not very conservative with system memory.

Vista Business on my laptop with 480MB and 32MB shared video memory seemed fine, or at least no slower than XP. More than enough for basic stuff, browsing the net, listening to music, etc. I wasn't running Aero, by the way, just the classic interface.

Thanks for that - that's what I needed to know.
And i'll be doing the same too (using classic interface, just internet/email/word etc.).

One thing missing on this thread is experiences from folks that are running vista on a system with 768 MB ram---which is a fairly common ddr configuration.---even if they are running a 64 MB on board video and on board sound, it still usually leaves 703 Mb ram to play with.

Lol... Although I don't claim to be an expert, I am no n00b either. Trust me, Vista non-Aero is fine for basic stuff with 512MB. I am speaking from experience, whereas you probably aren't. 'nuff said.
