I suck at video games, so it was fun for me -- great eye candy too LOL

I just built a HD 4850 setup running Vista Business 64bit and have had no problems what so ever. If you are concerned about the heat generated by the reference design then I recommend you look into the MSI card I bought as the idle temperature is 50C and the highest I've seen mine under load is 80C.

Crysis runs pretty well at 1650x1050 on very high detail. It does slow down when AA is enabled though.

I just upgraded my Vista x64 desktop to a 4850 from sapphire. It uses a non-reference dual-slot cooler and a shorter board redesign (sapphire says the new board design saves them money, so I was actually able to get it for less than the price of the stock one :Q; ). No problems with it, and managed to overclock it to 700MHz GPU and 995MHz Memory, with the fan only spinning at 20% and it's at 43C idle and 59C load.

I have a visiontek 4850 and my system randomly crashes during World In Conflict and Mass Effect both of which run off the UT3 engine and i have my fan set to 100% cause the noise doesn't bother me i get a bunch of lines up and down my screen and then i have to do a hard shut down on my system what gives? Also i am using Vista 64

I wonder if 100% fan is too much power draw or something, and contributes to a crash after a while? With my Vista 64 and Visiontek 4850, I set the fan to 40% and play Mass Effect perfectly.

Maybe your case cooling is inadequate? You may still be overheating, even with the fan at 100, if you can't push all that air outside and draw in cool air. Also, World in Conflict does not run on the UE3; it uses a proprietary engine developed by Massive (Masstech engine).

So I've finished upgrading everything and I ended up with this:

E8400
P5Q Pro
Sapphire HD4850 (dual-slot cooler)
4GB DDR2-800 Corsairs
OCZ600W

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

One follow-up question:

Is it generally a better idea to use the ATI's driver or the manufacturer's driver?

Use ATI's driver. I haven't had a single issue with my Visiontek 4850 under Vista 64

Not to beat a dead horse, but I also have the HD4850 running without problems with Vista Home Premium 64-bit and the Intel X48 chipset (Gigabyte board).

Havent had any issues yet except the drivers not providing the right resolutions to my monitors eventhough the video driver regonizes the right monitor.

I got it working but talk about annoying.

CCC seems to crash when I first boot my machine (Vista 64) ever since Catalyst v8.7. It's really annoying and I hope AMD fixes this issue. Otherwise, everything runs fine and CCC doesn't crash after the OS is fully loaded. I put an Accelero S1 on my 4850 and it runs 41/48°C for idle and full load.
