Vista 64 w/SP1 - Disk Manager Problems

Good Evening Everyone.

I have recently discovered that the Disk Manager applet within Computer Management on my PC, running Vista 64, w/SP1, will not fully launch. I get to the point where the line at the bottom of the screen says that it is loading the disk configuration, but goes no further. The applet locks up at that point and requires Task Manager to forcibly close the applet. The indication when closing through Task Manager says that it's a Hang, and that's waiting for vsd.exe. However, NOTHING that I've tried will get Disk Manager to fully load and work. Thus, I cannot install any new disks, repartition, etc.

If anyone has some information on this issue, I'd sure like to hear about it.

Many thanks in advance. Best regards to everyone. TheBeagle

Are you doing this with an Administrator account or User account? Disk Management needs to be run as an Administrator, and it should prompt you to enter Administrative credentials provided you haven't done something like disable UAC.

I haven't upgraded to SP1 yet...I've been holding back since I haven't had any major problems yet with the stock version.

I'll be upgrading in the near future, but am waiting on the smoke to clear a little more since it's only been a couple of months.

You might want to consider seeing if you can reapply SP1....maybe something that went corrupt on or after the install can be repaired?

Good Afternoon Everyone.

Yes, I am launching the program as Administrator. Here's the log print out from Task Manager when I'm forced to get out of the frozen program by brute force of closing the hung up program. I hope someone can decipher all of this for me. Thanks. Best regards to everyone. TheBeagle :disgust:

Good Evening Everyone.

Well, I believe the culprit has been located. After much consternation, I decided to reformat the primary hard drive (WD VelociRaptor) and reinstall the OS. At each stage of rebuilding the entire system, I checked the functionality of Disk Manager to see if it acted up. Not until I installed a certain piece of software (application) did the problem re-appear.

Lo and behold, the culprit is none other than Nero 8 Ultra, revision 8.3.2.1b and also 8.3.6.0. As soon as that software is loaded, the Disk Manager applet in Vista 64, w/SP1, creases to function. To restore full functionality, all you need to do is un-install Nero 8 Ultra. Once un-installed, the functionality of Disk Manager immediately returns.

It is obvious that Nero 8 Ultra has code that seriously conflicts with the M$ Disk Manager in Vista 64, w/SP1. However, there is NO CONFLICT with the latest version of Nero 7 Ultra, Revision 7.11.10.0.

Therefore, although I don't know what is actually causing the problem within Vista 64, I know what is bringing the pox to the table - Nero 8 Ultra. I sure hope Nero gets this fixed damn quick, since I need that version 8 for its expanded Blu-ray capabilities.

In any event, that's the results of the investigation. Hope that might help someone else in that sort of a perplexing situation.

Best regards to everyone. Have a nice evening. TheBeagle

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit with SP1 and the lite version of Nero 8.3.2.1. My Disk Manager runs fine.

Good Morning Mr. HP & Everyone.

I'm not sure what the exact combination of factors are that causes this problem, but I know that Nero 8 Ultra triggers the situation. It might also have something to do with the RAID 1 array that I'm running, and also the nVidia video drivers (since the movement of the Disk Manager applet windows with Nero 8 installed is very choppy and will stop responding for distinct moments). But ALL of those indications of a problem immediately disappear when Nero 8 is removed from my system.

It's quite perplexing, since I wouldn't have thought an application like Nero 8 would cause such a situation. I'm sure it's really a combination of factors, but I can't seem to figure out what all of those critical pieces happen to be, aside from the Nero 8 trigger.

Best regards to everyone. TheBeagle
