Vista Blows

With all the driver issues and software incompatibility / no support, I'm really thinking about going back to XP. I tried to stick it out for the past month, but I'm not sure it's worth it to play on Vista right now. I think the "new toy" effect is wearing off and now I just want my functional machine back. I was much more productive on XP.

Whatchu think?

What he said. Dual Boot is the only way to go. I'm not giving up XP for a long time and I really don't have a need for Vista right now.

So I'm looking at your sig, OP. What hardware there do you have driver issues with?

OK, so I'm posting this from my freshly reinstalled XP. The nVidia beta drivers SUCK. I proved this just now by loading XP and the proper drivers. Everything is crisp and clear again. No more fuzzy letters on white backgrounds with bleeding. My letters were bleeding!! Some outlined in red, some outlined in green. REALLY annoying.

This settles it. Vista can bite me for at least another month.

PS: Sound Blaster drivers are still in beta too, I think.
Kaspersky isn't supported on Vista yet.
Riva Tuner doesn't autoload at startup.
VLC Media Player doesn't work: AT ALL - 8.6a or 8.6 SORTA - 8.5
There's probably more, but I still have some stuff to load on here before I can sleep comfortably.

It sounds like all the problems you are having have nothing to do with Vista, but everything to do with second parties hardware drivers and software. So your topic heading is a little misleading.

Yeah, that's probably more accurate. I'm blaming it all on Vista though. =D

Upgrade? Maybe after SP1 is released. Like this "is" the first generation. And first generations are usually "at your own risk".

Hmmm, let's see. In your words, 'Vista blows'. I'm assuming then, that for you, XP did not blow.

To me, it would seem strange to subject yourself to the worst of two products for your uses.

So, yes, use XP until, for you, Vista doesn't blow.

nVidia seems to have dropped the ball on the Vista release, which is too bad. There's even a site set up by some guy advocating a class action, claiming they have been locking threads and deleting posts in their forums. I don't put much credence in such consumer ranting ordinarily, but it seems to be at least a fair criticism this time, with ATI's drivers more stable and performing better under Vista than nVidias.

Agreed. I believe Vista is a quality OS, but I don't think I'm ready to use it as my primary OS yet.

SP1 for me. I have absolutely no reason to upgrade as of now.

Vista runs great with ATI video cards. I'm getting ready to upgrade soon and the only piece of hardware I'm worried about is my MSI tuner card. It's a Theater 550, anyone have any luck with that?

Probably because a piece of software intended for so many configurations, when 5% or so have problems we all get to hear about it. Also that 5% assume everyone else has that problem.

I have a dual boot vista / xp system and i agree vista does kinda suck still but it has a lot of potential and I reckon it is worth keeping it around for a while to wait and see what happens.

While the bleeding issue has been seen with nVidia drivers make sure you run ClearType Tuner (Google it) after you install. It made a night-and-day difference with text quality on my desktop's LCD.

I'm having issues with Photoshop (once it kept freezing on startup, but started working ok after a reboot), and attempting to access a compactflash card in my firewire CF reader causes explorer to hang. Vista has also hard locked once after putting the monitor to sleep. I'm sure all of these are the result of third party drivers being hastily written and inadequately tested, but it's disheartening that RTM has given me more issues in the past week than RC1/2 did during the several months that I ran them. Sadly, I'll probably be stuck with XP for a while longer. (sadly, because Superfetch is so great - it effectively turns my Raptor 150GB + 4GB of RAM into an SSD).

VLC works great

VLC 8.6a didn't work for me. You got yours working?? I was using Vista RTM (not retail version released... if they're any different.)

Last time I checked ClearType Tuner doesn't work for Vista yet.

VLC works fine for me... I get video, sound out of my X-Fi (with the beta drivers), etc.

Are you running 64-bit Vista by any chance?
