I'm probably not the first person to say this, but I'm tired of this piece of garbage known as Windows Vista. Crashes, compatibility issues, I've had it. I'm going back to XP. Maybe when DX10 games are in full swing I'll give it another shot but for now it's BYE BYE VISTA!!!! The only thing that's kept me around this long is the pretty Aero GUI.

I upgraded my aging 3.0GHz P4 machine from 512MB of RAM to 2GB, and my X600PRO 256MB card to an X1950PRO 512MB card and have a 4.2 "experience rating" or whatever the hell they call it so it's not a performance issue, I'm just tired of nothing working. Quake 4 is nothing but a big crash-a-thon and it's time to go back to good ol' XP. I plan to build a 64bit DX10 system down the road and I'll proably give Vista another shot then.

I remember back when XP first came out it was the same story, I ran XP for about a week, got fed up and went back to Windows 98. About 12 months later I went back to XP and found things to be much improved. Hopefully Vista will be the same story.

The thing that really chaps my ass is how when you go to install a program and the nice little compatibility issue box pops up it offers to find you a solution on the web. You look for a solution and they point you to the software makers website. Thanks Einstein!!!! I'd have never figured that one out. JEEZE........

And guess what else? I've used Macs briefly and the thing I HATED about Macs is how they try to be so damn user friendly it actually HARDER to do things. Vista reminds me of exactly that. There should be an option in Control Panel that says "treat me like I'm (put age here) years old" Why couldn't they have just left things the way they were? Why change Add/Remove Programs to Programs and Features? I think they did crap like that simply to keep people from saying that Vista is just XP with a different GUI. People use an OS for years and then they decide to put everything in a different place or to name it something else. What a crock.

Well, when you hear from me again, it'll be from an XP machine. Thanks for letting me vent.

No reason to complain if you already knew what to expect.

Microsoft has pretty much figured out that just because you're XX age, doesn't mean you should be treated as such.

You, for example, apparently couldn't handle it.

Sounds like hardware problem to me,I have 21 games installed on my Vista x64 and have yet to have any serious crashes or BSOD,as to compatibility I have yet to find any real problems with Vista.

With problem games try running XP SP2 compatibility mode and select run as admin, btw do we really need another Vista blows thread?

Use whatever your comfortable with, really.

Be it whatever flavor of the month Linux, Win98, Vista, XP, OS X (yes that is X, no 10 LOL) or whatever.

Change is inevitable, get used to it.

I agree with Mem, think you're running into hardware and driver problems. Something is definitely wrong with your system setup because I've seen GeForce Go 7400s and a Radeon X800 GT peg the video ratings at 5.9.

If your system is overclocked lower it back to the stock settings and run MemTest86+ for a little while. Then run "sfc /scannow" from the command prompt and after that run ScanDisk to fix any possible software corruption.

Don't blame your hardware issues on Microsoft.

Vista is phenomenal on solid hardware. I'm sad to say your P4 3.0GHz is a dinosaur and 2GB is really the starting point (IMHO) for RAM. That isn't because Vista is a "hog", but because the SuperFetch can (and does) make good use of extra gigs of RAM.

Perhaps you are also running in to ATI driver issues. I have experienced no problems with the last nVidia driver sets, and I've done a fair amount of gaming.

I've always wondered, is it referred to as OS "X", or OS "ten" in spoken language?

Spoken - OS Ten (OS ten point five or simply "ten three", etc)
Written - OS X

Posting "Vista sucks" threads should give an instant ban, really, it's getting pretty damn boring.

Or you could just call it "Tiger".

Nobody calls Windows Vista Windows 6.0 (read Windows VI).

and the OP couldn't just post in one of the 600 other "Vista Sucks" threads?

Nope. The point of posting Vista BLOWS on several different threads, is to get the point across that...well, Vista BLOWS.

At some point, you could probably Google Vista BLOWS, and it will have Anandtech on the top of the list with several different, but same, threads.

My suggestion would be to try the new Catalyst 7.3 drivers, till now the AMD drivers had poor (at best) OGL support and Quake 4 is an OGL game so the Catalyst 7.3s might fix your problems.

Also just as a sidenote I say OSX when speaking

Maybe all the Vista users with positive experiences should start threads like Vista rocks!!!!..... for the next 600 threads, maybe then you'll see our point too .

You've got to be kidding me .... LOL!!
I have run Vista on a P3 1GHz, 512MB PC133 ram and a Radeon 9600XT video card.
It ran just fine and was nice and responsive thank you.

So should we have 600 threads saying Vista is great?

Thsi is supposed to be a support forum. I don't have a problem with people posting their frustrations about Vista if they have a specific problem or question that could possibly be addressed by the group.

If you just want to rant, go to OT or something. 9 times out of 10, the rants about Vista have nothing to do with the OS itself anyway.

Exactly, they automatically blame the OS and never ask for tech support from the members here and start another Vista blows thread, common sense tells you if you have stability problems then start troubleshooting and asking questions at the forums here, guess its easier for them to blame the OS and post another Vista blows thread then find the real root of the problem.

Indeed, I think there should be a single sticked 'Vista Rules' and 'Vista Sucks' thread, and to keep all the general pro/con stuff in there. I lean towards 'Vista Sucks', with a theory that it will vastly improve with age, but all of these repeat threads are indeed unnecessary.

Except when you're talking about Cheetah, Puma, and Jaguar, people tend not to know which one you're talking about.

IMO, if you like a command line (DOS) or terminal window (UNIX) to do many things, you will be put off by Vista initially. It does make it harder for "power" users to find things with the intent of insulating less experienced users from the inner workings of the OS. Fortunately, Vista is fairly configurable and for the most part you can make it look and work like NT4/2000/XP and lose the "Vista-ness" of it.

Give it another year or two and it'll be a solid OS, and from Microsoft, you won't have any other choice--XP won't be sold after the end of this year, apparently. For now, I am sticking with XP, working more with Linux, and hoping OS X becomes available on all PCs.

Or there is Windows PowerShell:

I'm very much a power user -- even more so than others that claim the same and I disagree wholeheartedly.

There are more command line utilities than ever in Vista and there are elements have been sprinkled all over the shell that increase usefulness for power users. Customizable explorer you drop frequent folders into, the Ctrl-N key added to explorer. Search is unbelievably fast. Mousewheel-centric start menu, embedded burn button, Open folder here option the the context sensitive menu, etc etc.

If you are rolling back to classic mode then you aren't really a power user, you're just too lazy to learn something new and recognize added efficiencies. Have you even gotten good at Vista yet or are you just one of those MS haters that tries it just long enough so you can gripe? I'm also not really sure how you are making an argument about "insulating less experienced users from the inner workings of the OS" then go on to support OS X which is notorious for this.
