Fixed the thread topic.

I'm also having trouble with DVD movies as well. :disgust:

Still no word from Sapphire yet.

Strange, looking at everyone elses specs the only thing the same is Vista.

If anyone finds a solution, please post.

I uninstalled all my video drivers and I can now play a xvid movie; albeit it wasn't very pretty looking but no blue.

I'm sure its a video driver problem that both Nvida and AMD(ATI) both have.

I discovered that I have the same problem when playing DVDs in the default Windows Media Player (32-bit). So I tried switching to the 64-bit WMP and now, for the first time ever, I've succesfully played an entire movie on my system.

I think that the solution to my problem would be to get a hold of 64-bit codecs for XviD/DivX, so that I can use the 64-bit WMP for those formats as well. Anyone know if there are any 64-bit codecs available?

No problem with an X1050, 7.2 cats, and a clean system with only the Xvid codecs. Thumbs are ok, playing is ok and everything else. However, once in a blue moon (like twice in two months) it has BSOD 'ed when selecting a divx file (i.e. a single click) in windows explorer.

I've resolved my issue now.

I took switching the default player to 64-bit WMP11, installing Vista Codec Pack and VCP x64 Components.

Still no love on my end. I'm going to assume andersg has the 64 bit version of Vista.

Ironic that quicktime HD and regular movies play great with no problems whatsoever.

I tried winamp and still got blue.

Oh I hope they fix this soon, I have 40g of videos I'd like to watch.

Maybe its a sign to get my HTPC running, and yes it will be XP MCE.

Well...I don't know what you're doing guys...all I can say is Vista is sweet...no problems for a month now....I have watched every DIVX or XVID video (and DVDs and DVD-Rs too) that I have....(chapters from Heroes, Lost, Prison break and Jericho and DVD movies and DVD-R movie backups), no problems at all....I'm using a "retail" VISTA Ultimate X86 32 bit....

Yes, Retail....if you (anyone, I'm not pointing at anybody) have downloaded (ilegally) a copy of VISTA and you are having issues...please don't blame VISTA....blame yourself.

The vast majority of copies of VISTA OS for download are fake or incomplete copies of the original OS, so if you want VISTA, purchase it.

My support for Vista until Vienna hits the streets.

I love posts like these.. "OBVIOUSLY ITS YOUR FAULT BECAUSE IT WORKS FINE FOR ME"

Obviously it's a hardware issue and yes I have the full retail verson of Ultimate. Don't be a dick.

Isn't this just DivX/XVid writing to invalid memory and thus triggering a DEP bluescreen? What Xvid decoder are you using? What is the information in the "Problem Reports and Solutions" center about this crash?

If you uninstall your existing DivX/XVid decoders and instead used the latest FFDShow, does this then work properly... ?

i have used every codec under the moon, including the FFDShow drivers (yes the latest) and to no avail. The Problem Reports and Solution provided nothing. Anyways, I'm back on XP and it is lovely.

Using every codec under the moon is a huge no-no to me, since most codec packs install utter garbage that would cause further errors/damage. Remember that we're talking about one to one plugging of components: an XVID file ONLY requires Xvid, Divx, or a FFDshow decoder - installing any other codec or component whatsoever should add no value and not be germane. Now, old versions of Divx did cause DEP exceptions, so what you've said so far further scares me into thinking you had an old version of Divx floating around on your system.

Could you clarify 'nothing'? That data may be of value to me/others...

What does WMP's Help: About: Technical Support Information menu spit out? That should also be somewhat illuminative - and may point out what random third party stuff is still around. =

Please remember that a number of codec packs do not uninstall cleanly, and the system codec removal tools are bad. So without personally verifying each removed codec... yeah, I wouldn't trust the system.

well i started with FFD and worked from there. By 'nothing' i mean it says Windows has recovered from a Hardware error, and gives no further information, but I've formatted since then so maybe someone else can post the exact information.

I am gonna change my response cos I just a bluescreen just at the exciting bit of Lost

To those who think otherwise, this is definitely related to ATI from my point of view as every other box in the house is NVidia and in the 12-18 months I have been using Vista (or its betas) this has never happened on any of them. In fact I had never seen a blue screen on Vista (including those betas) before this ATI box's crashes with DivX/Vid.

I had just the Xvid codecs when it happened, so I removed them and installed ffdshow, same thing happened in a different place, took them off and resorted to the Vista codec pack and then even the CCCP pack (and I HATE codec packs!) and getting similar results.

^-- Codec packs are just going to have old versions of FFDshow or DivX or XVid anyways, so they pretty much cannot possible add value. =\

True, but often using slightly different versions which can be the difference between a black screen and no sound, or perfection

Disturbing...

No issues here though.

Took me a while to figure out how to get VLC working in Vista 32-bit Ultimate, but it & MPC & WMP all work fine for me.

I'm using a legal version of OEM Vista Premium.

I'm lucky to watch 8 secs of video(DVD, Xvid, and Divx) before blue.

On the blue screen:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The system encountered an uncorrectable hardware error.

blah
blah
blah

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0X00000124 (0X85922C18,0xb2000000,0x00000175)

Collection data for crash dump...
Dumping physical memory to disk

Sometimes after reboot Vista will come up with a "solution" to the problem by recommending me to update my video card driver.
