Hello,

SYNOPSIS: new system works fine for a week, add 2 Gb of RAM, now take 1+ hours between post to Vista booting up. Memtest runs with no errors. Help.

I apologize for the length of the post but I've tried many things to solve the problem

I recently built a new system:

IP35 Pro
Q6600 at stock speed with stock heatsink
2 Gb GSkill PC-6400 RAM
EVGA 8800 GTS 640mb
Seasonic M12 600w PSU
250 Gb IDE drive (ended up being the boot drive)
500 Gb SATA
all in an Antec p180b case

After a rocky start with the Vista install (64-bit version) everything seemed to be working wonderfully, so, of course I had to mess with it.

I added 2 Gb of the Gskill ram and put a 750 Gb SATA drive in the system. With the case still open it booted up fine and I could see the new ram so I shut it down put the side back on the case and put it into position.

Since then every boot shows the BIOS splash page (the kind of silly 4x4 vehicle Abit page), finished the POST and then the screen goes black. The first few times of this I would reset the system hoping it would improve. Then I tried booting to the Vista DVD hoping to repair the OS. I would get the "Windows is loading files. . ." status bar which would fill up and then seemingly hang

I posted this on the Abit forums (very helpful people, I would add) and got suggestions for manually setting memory timing and running Memtest. I manually set the timings (5-5-5-15 2.0v) and ran Memtest with no errors for over 24 hours but still a black screen after posting.

Finally I left the system at the "Windows is loading files. . ." for 1+ hours (in disgust) and when I came back I had the Vista "select language" page up. I was able to select "repair" and the appropriate disk but after the repair, still the 1+ hours of black screen (or "Windows is loading files. . .") before any activity.

I've tried putting another drive in the system (SATA) and reinstalling Vista. I've tried new ram (Patriot PC-6400 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2v). I've reduced the memory ratio to slow the memory down.

Today, after putting in the new memory the system came up to a "choose what OS to boot" with the choice of "Microsoft Vista Ultimate" and "Microsoft Vista Ultimate (tm) (recovered)". I selected "recovered" and am typing this now from my original installation on the IDE drive.

I have another motherboard I will be trying tomorrow (Asus p5k premium) but would love to keep the system together.

Any suggestions?

Likely a problem with the J.Micron IDE controller. Use SATA as your boot drive. Did you disable everything in the BIOS you aren't needing? 2nd LAN, audio if you use a soundcard, etc etc?

Strip the board bare and put board outside the case. Use one stick of RAM and one HDD. Reflash BIOS. Zero format HDD. Clean install windows. If problem persists, then you have a bad board.
