ok i installed vista on my desktop which is wired to my router (dlink 624 wifi router) sometimes...well most of the time when i start my computer and get into vista...it takes a long time for vista to actually connect to my router and then connect to the internet...this also happens on my laptop which has vista and i try to connect to the router via wireless connection...anyone know how to fix this?

Yeah, I've seen it on my box before. Not sure of the fix. Frankly I've been lazy about hunting down the source of the problem since I rarely restart my machine.

Not sure, I have a different but maybe related problem. I should note I'm running build 5744, not the final release. When I start up Vista, I'll have no connection. If I connect my cable modem directly to the PC, it works in a matter of seconds. Then, I can put it back how it was, through my router, and it works fine. I don't have this problem in XP. Like smilin, I've been lazy about it and just deal with it.

This is probably due to TCP window scaling. Vista supports the standard, but your router probably does not. Look for a firmware upgrade for the router (many devices have this issue and there has been a slew of new router firmwares coming out). It is a bug with the router, not Vista however.

So is the "lag" when Vista is trying to figure out if it's gateway supports TCP Window Scaling?

Tcp Window Scaling (random link, just google tcp window scaling vista and you'll find more than you ever wanted to know). But yea, while negotiating this lots of packets can be lost.

Interesting. My router supports this but it's disabled to keep the XP computers happy. I wonder why Vista isn't complaining.

Alright I see you say the problem is happening with both of your vista machines which would indicate that the problem is with your router. It's been years since I've messed with a dlink router but have you tried deviating any of the settings on it since the problem started? Have you power cycled your router since upgrading to vista? Have you checked the router settings to make sure that nothing else has changed? I recently upgraded 3 of my machines to vista and didn't experience any problems with connectivity.

I have this exact same problem..only i have 2 pc's and one of them have no problem connecting. But the other won't connect unless the other "wakes up" the router by being on at the same time. wasn't a prob with xp at all.

I just know enouch about routers to be dangerous, but here is a thought. I use a DSL modem that has a firewall built into it and it is my understanding that routers also have a hardware firewall. Vista has the firewall defaulted to "On" and there is a message saying that using 2 firewalls can cuase a problem. Could it be that 2 firewalls being on at the same time causes a slow connect?

My DSL connection varies, taking anywhere from 2-30 seconds to connect. I have Vista firewall on, so I'll have to turn it off and see if it makes any difference. Just a thought!

I'm also seeing slow transfers between 2 PCs on the same network running vista. Doesn't happen when I change them both to XP. Can't figure out how to set priority on adapter in Vista. In XP I'd go to tools advanced - things are really difficult for me to find in Vista.

That comment is regarding two software firewalls on the same box. The scenario you outlined isn't only supported, it's recommended (perimtere fw, on box fw for each node)

Thanks for the info.. If I understand correctly, it is a good thing to have both a hardware and software firewall on, just not 2 software firewalls.

well i have power cycled both my router and my cable modem and vista still connects slowly...when i use the "diagnose and repair" option, the option to "automatically obtain ip..." sometimes works, but sometimes it doesnt and the other options most of the time do not work....

Most likely your router vendor hasn't released updated firmware yet then, your gonna have to ring them and see if there is a beta.

Vista automatically opens ports for it's default "network essential" services so it's highly unlikely that it's interfering with network connectivity.
