My wallet is safe for few more months.
You would think they would support 98/ME until it came out.

Ah..

It looks like they are having driver problems.

They are actually planing on releasing it in November.. but only to big business customers. Which means to me that it will be aviable on only certain hardware configurations that businesses will buy in bulk.

The rest of everybody else, due to the nature of the hodgepodge of PC hardware aviable to general consumers will have to wait till more drivers get included into the defautl install of Vista.

That is my take on it.

The version released in november to volume license customers will be identical to the consumer version. The difference is that it takes only two weeks post RTM to get it out to customers with VLAs. It takes much longer to get it to OEMs to be customized and preloaded on machines, packaged and shipped to retail outlets, etc.

Think the delay may have something to do with the PS3? Is a longshot, but I think it's reasonable that's in their strategy.

Ah.. So the only way to use Vista on November is if your a volume license customer and you want to blow away a Windows XP install for Vista and that Vista won't be aviable pre-installed on computers until January?

You don't need to 'blow away' anything. What it will allow orgs with VLAs to do is start creating their WIM images for deployment internally.

But yes, under the current plan, VLA customers will have access to Vista in November. It's a little unclear to me which SKU they will use, but I would think it would be Enterprise, since this is VLA only. Over the next two months, it will be distributed to OEMs and retailers so that consumers will be able to get it preinstalled with a new computer, or buy it off the shelf.

HECK NO!! They shouldn't even consider such a thing!! Windows 2000 and Windows XP both deserved to have a very long mainstream support life without POS Windows 98/ME receiving any support along their side. Windows 98/ME should have died completely at the same time when Windows 2K still had tons of mainstream support ahead!!

Fortunately, POS Windows 98/ME will have thier support completely phased out by the end of June 2006, which means that Windows XP will still be in mainstream support before Vista is released.

Well you know what they say...

Software is never finished. It just stops being developed when the programmer gives up on it.

Or something like that.

I hope you are a young man if you want to wait for MS to do it right.

They just leave the problems behind and release a "new" operating system.

Ugh...I'm disappointed. I was planning to buy a new PC this Fall/Winter and take a chance with Vista on it...but now I don't know. I may just stick with XP for a few more years. It's not a bad OS now that SP1 and SP2 have seemed to fix it fairly well...

Here's a question... Does Vista fix one of the biggest, well-known, but minor annoyances with XP: the fact that auto arrange by name is flaky at best with Tile view? I still can't believe Microsoft never bothered to fix that in XP. Oh, and how your folder views just randomly change for no reason.

I swear MS does some of this stuff on purpose so they can use it as a selling point down the road for a new OS.

You seriously have been traumatized by Windows 98 in some sort of way.. do you have nightmares about it? Every fvcking comment you make about Windows 98 goes along the lines like this "POS Windows 98 Should Die".
It reminds me of two children arguing over who's daddy is better than who..

Can you give us valid reasons as to why Windows 98 sucks? Anything useful, besides the fact that today's hardware will not run Windows 98? Do you actually have anything valid to point out besides "POS Windows 98" ???? Anything???

In its time, Windows 98 was just as stable as Windows XP is today. When installed properly, Windows 98 was fairly stable. Windows XP has just as many bugs, issues and flaws, that it can be compared to "yesterdays" Windows 98 issues...
Based on that alone, I predict that in five years after Windows Vista release, you'll be screaming and ranting on about how Windows XP is a POS operating system and should die and not be supported..

Oh well.....gives consumers more time
to save and upgrade.

Maybe hard drive manufactures will
have some of those hybrid drives out by then.
That and DirectX 10 cards.......kinda curious
about these two things.
