Vista file sharing problem

So I just did a fresh install today of Vista on my laptop. My desktop is running XP.

My problem is that I cannot access the administrative share c$ on my desktop from my laptop. I even had to do god knows what to get it to give me a listing of public shares on my desktop.

Before I got vista, this worked fine. And right now I'm able to access the shares on my laptop from my desktop, and shares from my laptop to my other computer (running win 2003).

When I do \\desktop\c$ it gives me the username and password prompt, to which I enter the administrative credentials of my desktop (shared by laptop).

I have a linksys router, no domain, and both computers are in WORKGROUP.

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

Thank you jack, but I've been to most of those links. Unfortunately they haven't helped. I've installed the patch, tried it without my firewall, set the workgroups, etc, all as suggested. but it still keeps asking me for password on administrative shares.
regular shares will work provided I set their permissions (not just SHARE permissions, but regular permissions too) to grant access to EVERYONE.

I've been using administrative shares to do what I need for years now with no problem =/.

Every one means every one on the list not every one that wants.

In addition Vista do not let you share C$ even if it looks like you can set it up, it is part of the extra security.

1. Make sure that the user you are using to access the desktop has the appropriate share access and NTFS security rights to use the share.
2. If you stored that user using the Network Passwords double check the username and key.
3. Make sure that the network you are connected to is set as Private.

Hopefully this will help. JackMDS, have you tested the root share on Vista? At home I can map the root of my Vista desktop without a problem.

The problem turned out to be totally trivial. For some reason my system clock was set a month back (I didn't notice this). I set the time right and it works.

BTW, Jack, Vista does let you share C$.
