Vista Home doesn't always connect

We only have 1 machine here with Vista here, and it's home edition. But it doesn't always seem to connect with the network here. All I have to do is switch the plug location from one port to another port on my WRT150N Linksys Wireless Router and it connects again. It could be tomorrow, 2 days or 7 days and I have to switch the ports again on the router. This guy takes his laptop home everyday but doesn't plug it in to a network there. Never had this issue when he use to have a XP Pro machine.

I have very little experience with Vista, so I am kinda stuck now.

The WRT150N should have a feature in the latest version of the stock firmware to allow you to set "permanent" DHCP addresses, seems like when the lease on the IP is expiring, Vista is being stupid about renewing it. Set permanent DHCP IP for that MAC address, no need to renew lease, problem solved

I have a similar problem with vista home.
But I only have a modem and when I did some downloads, maybe download 3-4 movies at 3-4 times. It disconnected, I have to restart the modem..do you know what the problem is?

It may be your modem, but if it isn't, it sounds like Vista's maxing out on TCP/IP connections.

Try this:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/T...-Limit-AutoPatch.shtml
http://aadhu.com/2008/01/09/in...tcpip-max-connections/

What kind of modem is it? I've had nothing but nightmares with any cable modem that wasn't a Motorola Surfboard; especially those crappy Toshiba ones Road Runner used to give out.

It defaults to 70,000 connections, I don't think you'd be able to max that out unless you were downloading hardcore warez and pr0n 24/7. You mentioned Comcast in your PM, that means you've got a cable modem. I wasn't asking if it had problems, I was asking what kind it was (brand/company: Toshiba, Motorola, something like that). A modem can be dropping packets and they'll never know any better, all those clowns check is your signal strength and noise levels.

Again, the instructions are very straightforward, just read them:

SHORT INSTRUCTIONS: UNZIP THE FILE, run Patch32.bat if you have 32-bit Windows Vista, run Patch64.bat if you have 64-bit Windows Vista.
To see if your computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, do the following:
1. Open System by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
2. Under System, you can view the system type.
Make sure you right click on the right patch and "Run as administrator" instead of just opening it. When it asks you about UAC (NOT WINDOWS ASKING IF YOU WANT TO OPEN THE FILE, the patch will ask if you want to disable UAC), push Ctrl C, and then Y. You do NOT want to disable UAC.

LONG (ORIGINAL) INSTRUCTIONS: Unpack the archive and run Patch32.bat (for x86) or Patch64.bat (for x64).
Run UndoPatch.bat to uninstall concurrent half-open TCP/IP connection limit patch and restore the original tcpip.sys, and registry setting.
it will give you the option to install the tcp/ip patch as well as disabling UAC. If you would rather keep UAC enabled, make sure you push Ctrl C when prompted about disabling UAC by the patch, and press Y to terminate. If you accidentally disable UAC, use the two uac "on" reg files included below to enable it again.
uac_admin_on.reg and uac_admin_off.reg to click to easily enable and disable uac for administrators after you patch your connections.
uac_user_on.reg and uac_user_off.reg to click and easily enable and disable uac for user accounts after you patch your connections. "

If the patch is confusing you, I'd strongly advise AGAINST running it. If the instructions are confusing, then you're the type of user who would end up with a broken computer after a week if they disabled UAC. This stuff can brick your computer if you don't do it right.
