So I'm trying to see how well my current rig will run Vista and decided to test it out on a spare HDD. I yanked all the power to my drives and plugged in an old school IBM 40gb 7200rpm drive.

Everything was going fine (I made Vista format the drive) until I got to what looks to be the last step of the install - where it reboots. It locked up! I'm not sure what happened, but the scrolling green bar just froze .

I thought it was maybe the HDD, so I swapped it out with a Seagate 80gb 7200rpm drive. Same thing! What gives?

Current setup is:
A643200+, Chaintech VNF3-250, 2x1GB DDR400, eVGA Geforce 6800, Hauppague WinPVR 150, Belkin F5D7000, NEC 3550A, Lite-ON CD-RW.

Thoughts?

Edit: I swapped out my 2x1GB to 2x512MB, and it got maybe just a bit further. I told it start Windows Normally, and I got the mouse cursor on a black screen and then locked up. Tried different slots on my RAM, no dice. Even tried one stick. No good...locked up on the progress bar again but this time with the HDD light on...

Edit2: I can get it to boot into safe mode. What the crap is going on? But obviously windows won't finish the install in safe mode...

Edit3: I yanked out everything besides the video card and DVD drive that I'm installing from. still no dice. anyone with a vnf3-250 install vista and get this to work? what bios are you using?

I think you have the answer..."It locked up!..."

A good starting point to find your answer ("how well my current rig will run Vista ") is to download and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor from microsoft.

I had the same problem. When I did the install, I made the selection that connected to MS updtae site. It turned out that the probem was being caused by a Zoom modem driver that was being installed by the update site during the install. I reformated and installed without letting Vista go to the MS update site. Later, I installed the updates one at a time and when it installed the modem driver it would cause a problem. Reinstall and do the updates one at a time after the install is completed. When it crashes, you know what caused it.
