"Vista" is an idiotic moniker.

Well...what about Tiger? Isn't that stupid, also? NO. Vista just sounds like crap. It sounds like something you'll shell out lots of money for, and not get much in return, that's because it is.

Also, it may seem like I'm being a little too hard on Microsoft. Consider this- In the 4+ years that xp has been out, they really haven't done anything for it, except for a security update and a weak pop-up blocker.

The future of computing, and technology in general, does not include the words "proprietary", "EULA", or "activation key". If we are forced to repeatedly pay each time innovation is deemed appropriate, I don't think we'll get very far (or at least not as far as a utopian collective of programmers could get, as is the case with open source).

The reality of it is, I'm just really sick of everything related to Microsoft.

This belongs in OT (its not an OS question, its a stupid rant from a noobie). Or, add it to the current thread in OS. We don't need a second.

They can call it whatever they want (NG sounds catchy ) but I think they should leave some numbering scheme associated with it. Like you've got OSX Tiger but if you don't want to bother trying to remember which cat is which you can just remember 10.4(.x). Names are just marketing hoopla and not backing it up with something clear like a version number is something you'd expect out of Apple before MS.

Maybe the linux kernel should drop the numbering scheme and go with meaningful names instead "Linux NewTechnology" or "Linux Reloaded"

Much ado about nothing. I can't see the problem with "Vista," - it simply means a broad view. It is short, easy to remember, and not used by any competing product. It is a fairly common word here in the Southwest, and is part of the name of many towns. Chula Vista, Linda Vista, Alta Vista, Vista Ciudad, Loma Vista, etc., etc. It is a very common word in Spanish.

To me it sounds like a car from the 1970's after the US car makers were struggling with smog restrictions and trying to figure out how to make small cars.
(Imagine the old 'please don't rear end me' pinto... )

1977 Dodge 3-door Windows Vista
$300 OBO. 140,000 miles Good condition
Mechanics special!

Still, much better then the Windows Chevette.

Face it, no matter what they name it, someone will hate the name. I wonder if there will be Vista HOME and Vista Pro?

Please don't make the mistake of underestimating the Microsoft marketing folks. You can bet that they experimented extensively in focus groups with dozens of candidate names for months before announcing "Vista." They have billions riding on this operating system, and they didn't choose the name without a whole lot of careful rational thought. Unlike the names of its predecessors, it's easily understood by any speaker of any Romance or other European language and connotes very pleasant ideas and concepts. My guess is that they chose correctly and that, waves of hate from forums like this notwithstanding, Vista will gracefully become a household word around the world in the next few months. And it's better than either "XP" or "Me." It's an order of magnitude better than "Microsoft Bob." Let's give the Redmond folks credit for the improvement

I thought the year naming scheme was fine. I agree vista is pretty bad. They probably spent a lot on it though.

This isn't limited to MS. Unfortunately, silly name-branding and corportish BS generally is widespread in our society right now. For example, when you have accounting firms change their name to something meaningless like accenture I think it's equally silly.
