install tweakuac to get rid of the nagging popups

Why the hell would you install an app to do what you can do the same thing with a few mouseclicks?

Start->Control Panel->User Accounts and Family Safety->User Accounts->Turn User Account Control on or off

For that matter, why the hell would you turn this feature OFF in the first place? I assume you enjoy spyware?

it doesn't turn off uac, just greatly reduces the warning messages

Sorry guys! I admit I went a little overboard. The frustration of waiting is one of the reasons.

I am greatful to you guys' balanced approch towards such rants as mine. It has brought me suddenly from 'Blame Somebody" to "Solve the Problem" zone.

OK, I will give all 4 GBs of RAM to it,if it supports it.

By numerous incompatibilities I meant that I have Nero 6.6.1which was working sufficintly for me on my XP desktop giving me a whole lot of flexibility. Now VISTA says that this software is not compatible and doesn't run it in express mode which is the default (and easy) mode. Acer supplied writing software is not all that powerful as NERO was.

Other programs include some small Disk and registry cleaning utilities which I found very handy for cleaning of temp files and orphan registry entries. System tweaking software like tuneXP were also very effective in improving the boot up etc. All this is not running in vista.

There are also repeated pop ups telling some thing like ' ----program not starting -----I do not remeber the whole message. I think it started after I disabled some startup progrms from starting by dfault to give more RAM to the desired apps.

There is also some problem which randomly stops MS Excel sheets from opening.

I was not aware of the SP1. may be it will solve the problems.

I tried searching for the WINXP drivers for the hardware of this laptop online but in vain. This caused the frustration more than anything ealse which led to this rant.

I thank you all for your suggessions and advice.

Nero 7 or Nero 8 you'll need for Vista.(latest Nero 7 version I recommend, however supported version for Vista with Nero 7 was about a year ago), however if you want something less bloated try Ashampoo Burning Studio 7(they have a trial version you can download).

What's wrong with CCleaner,RegCleaner 4.3.0.780(make sure RegCleaner is set to run as admin),I use them both in Vista x64 with no problems, remember they are free too.

Vista has its own defragging,so you don't need to do a thing however if you want a free defrag program for manual defrags try Defraggler by makers of CCleaner

LOL, you got an Acer.

LOL, you incorrectly feel other brands are better, when in reality, notebooks are all crap that all have very high repair rates.

Vista is purile shit. It's seemingly incapable of simple tasks, such as closing a process.

PEBKAC/PICNIC errors aren't Vista's fault.

And what has been suggested is great.

One thing to add is that Nero 6.6 is ancient...not sure why it's Vista's fault ancient software might need to be updated.

My recommendation would be the newer Nero Lite.

While trying to LAN games such as WC3 the Windows XP computers are completely fine. However ALL the Vista computers are having problems ranging from lockups to being unable to close non-responding programs (as a result of recoverable lockups). If XP had DX10 i'm positive nobody would voluntarily use Vista. What a waste of 6 billion dollars.

You talking about Wing Commander 3 or Warcraft 3?..There's a big difference in time between the two(1994 and 2002).

FYI I have some very old games (Win95,98 games) that won't run in WinXP,however I won't say its XP fault, mainly because you can't expect every new OS at the time of release to support every old game out there, those games were made for the operating system of the time, and not one thats not even alpha or beta ,you can't have double standards ie one for Vista and one for XP,operating systems/drivers change over time, more releases there are then the more chances something will be incompatible with some very old games.

FYI I have some very old games ie Icewind Dale (2000 release date) ,Baldur's Gate (1999 release date) to name a few that run fine even on my Vista x64 so who are you going to blame now ?...Vista or the game developers of WC3?..bear in mind Vista was not even alpha as I stated..see my point?

Vista compatibility is very good considering how many games are out there.

I don't have those games so can't test them, however I have had/seen lockups in the pass (before I discovered the cause) caused by overclocked video cards in both XP and Vista, this goes for factory overclocked cards too(happened to me in XP and Vista, simple 10mhz underclock of my factory overclocked video card fixed it for me,100% stable since then),also some games need to be run as admin and XP compatibility mode with Vista, there could be many reasons why rather then just the game being incompatible period.
Remember gamers in general tend to overclock their hardware.

Everything is peachy on my Vista x64 system too.

I haven't had a single lock up or crash on Vista on both my laptop and desktop machines. I've also had no problem killing an unresponsive program, such as AutoGK when it was in the midst of something and didn't want an encode to finish. One click *boom* gone.
