Vista Notepad vs XP Notepad and Vista Wordpad

I've made many text files in XP, but if they're opened in Vista (64-bit) line breaks disappear most of the time. Couple questions:

1) How can I replace Vista's Notepad with XP's?
2) I notice Vista Wordpad keeps my line breaks. Has anyone else replaced their txt editor in Vista as Wordpad?
3) A free alternative that keeps unformatted text, with correct behavior unlike Vista's Notepad

I use Notepad ++

But on your note, I've opened over 300 of my old logs from XPs notepad in Vista Ultimate and see nothing of what you're talking about. My line breaks are no different.

Another vote for Notepad++ - Vista or XP.

This has always been an issue with Notepad. It shouldn't make a difference if it is XP or Vista.

Line breaks in Windows are typically defined as two characters: a carriage return followed by a line feed. *nix operating systems typically use just a carriage return to define a line break. If you open a text file created in Unix or Linux that has only carriage return characters and no line feed characters, it will not display properly in Notepad. Wordpad and other text editors are able to display the file correctly.
