I can hack $199 for an upgrade to ultimate... just as soon as I pay off my macbook. I really expected Ultimate to be like $500+ for the full edition from what I've read. It's relieving to see that it won't be much more than XP was.

Wonder what will happen to XP prices? Do you all think XP prices will drop substantially? I'd love to pick up a Media Center license for a few bucks.

I predict I'll be sticking with XP for a couple years after. Not that the upgrade price is bad but I really don't want to touch this OS until they've had some time to work the kinks out.

Not sure if this is current, but was at one time.

How the fvck can they call something the "Ultimate" version and then have features that are "Optional"? Doesn't ultimate mean that you get everything and that you are paying out the arse for those perks anymore? WTF???

DX10...Crysis

I'm going to buy a new OS that I hate for one game...a game that'll look almost as good on the OS I already have? That doesn't seem like a wise financial decision from my perspective.

You obviously aren't familiar with the phenomenon of collectors edition DVDs. A mega ultra ultimate edition is obviously planed for release roughly six months after you spring for the ultimate edition.

I would like to upgrade to the Home Premium edition so that I could use MCE on my PVR box, but since it now has W2K on it, I would need to buy Pro Premium and that ... isn't' going to happen for THAT price !! Actually, Vista beta 2 wouldn't install on my PVR box (my guess was it didn't like the Hauppauge card) but it runs beautifully on my spare gamer rig.

Windows Vista Business $269/179

Windows Vista Home Premium $239/$139

Windows Vista Home Basic $199/$99

Of course, these are guesses only"

These are exact words from the article. Key words, "EXPECT" and "GUESSES".. therefore, this article is pretty much crap.

We'll know the price's of Vista when the actual product is on the shelf.

The article is not crap, it has the actual prices for Canada. He then took the prices for Vista vs XP in Canada and extrapolated an estimated price in the US from the US XP price. They're not just wild guesses, they're reasonably accurate guesses.

It's still crap either way. Vista isn't done. Prices are still subject to change.

What is "windows activation services" ? I notice the business versions and Ultimate list this option as "NO". I'm thinking this is NOT referring to the windows activation as we know it ? If so, they should prepare to see the Ultimate version all over the .net as well as the business versions..

Anyone clarify?

Pricing is now available on Amazon.com

Personally, I'm waiting for the Windows Vista Super Duper Limited Edition signed by Bill Gates -- it'll by every geeks wet dream!

Amazon is not a reputable source for pre-release pricing either. They are probably only correct 10% of the time.. and since Vista is not even done, I'm guessing this is part of the 90% where they are wrong.
These kind of threads are so pointless.. just wait till it's done and Microsoft releases the prices.

Do higher versions automatically have everything below them?

Home Premium has the nice Media features that I would like. I would also want Remote Desktop from the Business Edition. But will Business have all the Media support?

And they are limiting gaming and performance for the Ultimate. How stupid is that. MS wants to squeeze every ounce of money out of consumers.

They spent a lot of time stripping functionality in the limited versions, and probably added a bunch of bugs and bottlenecks in the process. If only they spent the time to improve the product, maybe it would be good and finished by now and with fewer problems.

I would like to se a hacked version of Ultimate with full configurability to be any version you could want or need.

Edit: Read the entire article and answered my own question. Only Home Premium and Ultimate have all or any media features. So that would make Home Premium the one you would find on all but the most basic OEM PCs and Ultimate is needed to replace XP Pro. The rest are overly specific and limited. New ways for MS to rob consumers.

And where is DX10?

I'm pretty sure that's for volume license activations.

??

Most Vista DVDs are technically ultimate DVDs. It is the PID that decides which version you get. Which is why you'll be able to purchase a PID online and upgrade without purchasing new media.

Stash,
I've been meaning to ask....are there still going to be separate DVDs containing "generic OEM" and "branded OEM" versions of Vista?
