Hi guys. I am having trouble viewing TV thru media center in Vista RC2.

I have the ATI tv wonder Elite (basically a 550 tuner). The drivers seem to install fine during the installation. There are no exclamation marks next to any ati related hardware post installation on the device manager page.

I am able to go thru the quick setup in the media center, where it searches for a connection and signal. It finds my comcast cable provider for my area.

But then when I click on TV, or even the pre-recorder 1 min sample of apollo 13, I recieve a video decoder error.

Does anybody know of a work around.

Thanks guys. This is the first time nobody at AT responded to my cry for help.

Well I figured out the solution. I apologize to all who already know this and if this was already discussed in previous forums. But my explanation will be brief and below simplistic at best. Here goes:

So MS made the video codec for media center time sensitive. They were set to expire jan 3, 2007 on Vista RC2. I set the clock back to jan 1, 2007 and bingo, i am watching tv and can view the clips.

So what to do if you don't want keep your date set to jan 1, 2007, find new 3rd party codecs. I tried installing k.lite codec pack, but that did not solve my problem. I then installed Nvidia purevideo and that worked perfectly.

So problem solved. Download and install nvidia purevideo.

Beta releases of Vista are meant to be ran on a system for only so much time. MS went out of their way to make components of it expire at a given time. I guess the reasoning behind their actions is to make people buy the public release instead of using a beta permanently. But, in doing so, they leave some beta users dry until it's release.

For those who have purchased copy of Vista ulitmate. Can you please tell me what you update history looks like. All I see in mine are Windows defender updates.

I am afraid I will have to stop using Vista RC2 if MS stops updating this version. Shame I liked how Vista was running on my system.

It's a beta, released to the public with the intention of receiving feedback to make the final product better.

Well duh. I know thats the idea. But you can't blame a broke student for wanting to try adn get a way with using something for free.

Oh well, I will probably just buy an upgrade version of vista, when i upgrade my system.

Also MS is releasing Figi, the next version of Vista, in 2008. Is this some major update to vista, which we can download for free or do we have to purchase this aswell. If its the latter than i will just wait for figi.

Remember, Microsoft has to pay for these codecs; they needed to test them in the betas obviously, but it would have been unreasonable to license the codec for every beta tester. Apparently they just bargained a deal with whoever supplied the codec that allowed them to include it as long as it automatically disabled when the main testing period was done. Makes sense.

Did you check to see if your school has a volume license for MS software?

No one is going to be able to answer those questions for you. Post RTM plans are still largely confidential.
